Username limitations? Empty Username limitations?

What are the limitations people have to abide by when creating usernames? By this I mean things such as can they have a space in their name? Is there a max number of characters? Are special characters allowed?

1. Yes they can have spaces
2. The max number of characters (I dont know, i will need to find out)
3 Are special characters allowed? Like these: ♀™☺☻♥♦♣♠•◘○♪☼♫►↕◄‼ (I am pretty sure most of them are allowed)
