Help with Homepage Message!!!!!

I need help with the homepage message sytem. How do you make it so when you log in, it says hello "username". I have seen some forums with this feature. Even when you are a guest, it says hello Guest. Is there some type of coding required. Here is a picture of what I mean.
It also has a feature that shows, your last visit. I would like to know how to do this. Please Help.
