They don't harm your forum in anyway. Bots search your forum and update their search engine.

Re: guests in our locked forum
Hi Lesley
Do you mean 'who is online' was showing a guest ? If so, this is perfectly normal they are not viewing your forum if guests are not allowed. It shows people as guests when they are on the log in/register page of your forum.

1. A member will show as a guest until they log in - so you would probably recognise the ip no.
2. People who haven't registered will obviously also show as guest if they visit your register page, thats why you wouldn't recognise the IP.
Guests show up on my forum all the time, there's no need to worry they cannot actually view your forum if your site doesn't allow guests.

Hi Mr Stamper
Bots take screenshots of your forum which enables people (when searching for sites using keywords) to find your forum, and other similar forums.

They take screenshots? I don't think so. All they do is gather information that is used to reference your site and allow it to show up in it's respective search engine.akashic wrote:Bots take screenshots of your forum which enables people (when searching for sites using keywords) to find your forum, and other similar forums.

Hi Daijiro
Thats what I said > '(when searching for sites using keywords) to find your forum, and other similar forums.'
My apologies re: screenshots, I have screen shots on the brain at the moment. I meant they collect data etc.
Bots:
Bots are most commonly used in indexing on a search engine. When used for this purpose bots are programmed to visit sites on the Internet for use on search engine results pages. That is, the hits that you get the next time you perform a search on your favorite search engine will be there, in part, because a bot went out and identified that site. Bots run periodically to make sure that the webpage still exists and is still relevant to a given topic. These bots are known as web bots, web spiders, or a web crawlers.
Web bots will also collect links from the website it visits and add those to the list of sites to visit. If you have heard that it is important to get other sites to link to yours, this is why. The more hyperlinks of your URL there are the better your site will be rated by search engines. In addition, bots can be used to check links on a website to make sure they are directing clicks to the right location and look for errors in HyperText Markup Language (HTML) code.
