hiding "new post" alert for hidden folders

I have one or two sections in my forum which are set to only be viewable by specified group members (a section for the mods, for example) which I want to have as subfolders of other sections. The only problem is that when someone posts in these sections, the parent folder's icon, which is visible to users not in the group needed to view the hidden folder, shows the "new post" icon.

Is there any way to set these restricted folders so that the parent folders don't show the update unless the user is in the required group?

You can always lock the forum. To do this, go to modify your hidden forum and once you are on the moderation page, set it as 'Locked'; Save the settings. once you have it Locked, members are not able to make new posts/threads.

Not really viable - the idea is to allow us to converse in private as required - discuss what we're doing or planning, advise any action taken, and so on - so we need it to be there as and when to post in and we need to see when it's updated.

just some way of setting the child to not reflect new posts in the parent would do.

So what you are saying is that you want a forum absically like an Admin Forum (in which only Administrators can have access to) or something similar?
You can do this by just creating a forum, and when you set the permissions, you just modify it to where only administrators can view and reply to that forum (or anythin similar to what you are asking).
