Solved Forum security

Post by [,]7H71 April 25th 2009, 3:01 pm

Hello,
I have a few security questions, because we have been threatened by a hacker, so our forum is jeopardized kind of. He said that it is very easy to steal administrator's password and than delete the whole forum and ban us all. Is it possible to somehow improve the forum protection? If it is as easy as he said, then there has to be some kind of possible defense against it. I have also spotted that the phpbb code is getting some newer versions over the time. Will this help me? How can I find out which phpbb version is currently installed on my forum? How can I download the newest patch? Is it free?
And than I just wish to assure myself that it is not such easy to crack the latest version of phpbb. I was stunned when I typed some random tags related to phpbb into google. Thousands pages focused only on phpbb hacking. Just hope you watch them regularly to catch up with the hackers.

Yes, but still that doesn't solve my problem. I just want to figure out how to prevent that from happening. If hacker gets in, he can easily take some private information from it and he doesn't have to even touch the forum.

I still wish to know, where can I find which phpbb version is on my forum out. And what if the skin is phpbb2, can I download there phpbb3 and save the current phpbb2 skin? Or what would happen? And how can I do that?

So, how do the phpbb versions work? Where can I find out which version is on my forum? Does my forum patch itself automatically?

Some answers,

Quetesh wrote:Is it possible to somehow improve the forum protection?

No, you cannot touch or go near the database, or the forumotion security settings

I have also spotted that the phpbb code is getting some newer versions over the time. Will this help me?

No, unless forumotion adds it, you cannot do what PHPBB is doing, forumotion is NOT the same as PHPBB; they use their own special coding.

How can I find out which phpbb version is currently installed on my forum?

Navigate:
Admin panel >> Display >> Chose a theme > Version: Should be "PHPBB2" "PHPBB3" "PUNBB" and "INVISION"

There is no such a=thing as "phpbb 3.0.5" here at forumotion, we all use the same form of PHPBB

How can I download the newest patch?

You don't, forumotion doesnt do "patches"

Is it free?

100% for the life of your forum.

Unless u want addition gallery space, remove adds or a personalized domain name.

Will that new patch or phpbb version protect me from some hacker?

Dont worry about hackers, they dont happen on forumotion, its just people lose their passwords and they clain "hacker"

Thank you very much!

So, how do the phpbb versions work? Where can I find out which version is on my forum? Does my forum patch itself automatically?

Find version: Admin panel >> Display >> Chose a theme >

We dont do patches Wink

I hope this helps out,
Darren.

No worries, I like to answer questions in full, just to make sure people (or myself) don't miss them

I'm glad to have helped out Smile
