Solved viewing the chatbox when not logged into it

Post by Ayame July 5th 2009, 4:47 am

Okay, so I looked around and didn't find anything about this, so here's my problem.

For the past few weeks, I have not been able to view the contents of the chat box while not logged into it. The same issue is occurring on all the forums I frequent, and it's not just me with this problem. Everyone on my forum, at least, has the same issue... and it's likely the same for everyone on the other forums. I was just wondering if there was any way to fix this, as being able to lurk without logging is a very useful ability... especially when you are trying to find out if there is reason to ban an undesirable member...

On forumotion, you MUST be logged in to view contents of the chatbox.
Theres no way around it, you can suggest it though!

There is no need to suggest it, it won't be thought on.

The decision made by the forumotion technicians was to stop people from looking (or "spying") on people in the chatbox.

This was done puerly for security reason's!

Kinko, I think you may have misunderstood. I'm logged into the forum itself, but I used to be able to sit outside the chatbox and read what was being said without actually going into it. It's only recently that I, and others, have been unable to lurk.

And Darren, the reason I want to be able to see what's being said in my forum's cbox is for the SAFETY of my forum. I need to know if the guy I'm concerned about is who I think it is. If it is, I need him gone. He's a hacker, and a danger to my members. However, if I can't prove it's him, I can't ban him without my members getting pissed off at me. We're an RP forum, and everyone is concerned about our member base. If I go around banning people for the reason that I'm uneasy about them, then I'll lose members, and the whole forum will fall apart.

There is no way to do it then Wink

However, you could make a new account, and have it just as a member, (so he/she doesn't know its you) and you can talk with him/her.
Just don't tell anyone its you.

I can try that, but I seem to have a distinctive way of speaking that gives me away... and I have NO clue what it is that gives me away. There's no way to turn on the ability to lurk just for admin? Or even just the founder?

No, no and no.

It was done for security reasons; out of our control and we can't do ANYTHING

It's kinda silly IMO... it's for security reasons, I know... but what can you learn that you can't just log in to find out, anyway? It was easier when you could back read BEFORE logging in... so that people aren't talking to someone who's back reading in the archives, like I always do when first logging into the box...
