more than 1 group - permissions

I want some of my members to be in 2 groups.

One is 'new members' and one is restricted access (members).

The new members are coloured and have all the permissions and is an open/public group.

The restricted access ones have only restricted access and is a hidden group.

I would like my restricted access members also to be new members (and be orange) but it seems that if I make them a member of the group with all permissions, they get all the permissions and the restricted access permissions get over-ridden.

Is there something I can do about that?

Unless the user is already in the other group that has access to the restricted section you can't stop it.
