Hacking of my forum Empty Hacking of my forum

Post by clearnights1 June 1st 2010, 9:53 pm

I am the administrator of a small forum here. I noticed at the bottom of the page where it shows how many users, there is listed 1 Bot. Can the Internet Bot be removed or is my forum going to be hacked off the internet because of the bot. About 6 hours ago I could not bring up my Administrator's panel nor the Forumotion help page. Only today have I been able to access my administrator's panel and the help page.

@LCFC~ you don't need to put your forum link here, it's considered advertising and you're only allowed your forum link if it's needed.

For clearnights2, if you have lost your admin password, please visit this thread https://help.forumotion.com/rules-important-points-f10/for-founders-who-lost-their-passwords-t42285.htm

About bots, they are essential for putting your website on the net or search engines, they don't cause any trouble nor causes the lost of your password, read this thread about 'bots' to get more information about it and it will also be shown there(how to hide the bots) https://help.forumotion.com/tricks-tips-f32/bots-who-and-what-they-are-t55170.htm

Thank you for the information. The password issue was only at this forum. Thanks for the bot info which I did try to look up but could not find. I'm glad you have the link.

What concerned me about bots: (From Wiki)

"Another, more malicious use of bots is the coordination and operation of an automated attack on networked computers, such as a denial-of-service attack by a botnet. Internet bots can also be used to commit click fraud and more recently have seen usage around MMORPG games as computer game bots. A spambot is an internet bot that attempts to spam large amounts of content on the Internet, usually adding advertising links.
There are malicious bots (and botnets) of the following types:
Spambots that harvest email addresses from internet forums, contact forms or guestbook pages
Downloader programs that suck bandwidth by downloading entire web sites
Web site scrapers that grab the content of web sites and re-use it without permission on automatically generated doorway pages
Viruses and worms
DDoS attacks
Botnets / zombie computers; etc.
File-name modifiers on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks. These change the names of files (often containing malware) to match user search queries.
Automating the entry of internet sweepstakes or instant win games to get an advantage
Automating tasks on promotional web sites to win prizes
Bots are also used to buy up good seats for concerts, particularly by ticket brokers who resell the tickets. Bots are employed against entertainment event-ticketing sites, like TicketMaster.com. The bots are used by ticket brokers to unfairly obtain the best seats for themselves while depriving the general public from also having a chance to obtain the good seats. The bot runs through the purchase process and obtains better seats by pulling as many seats back as it can.
Bots are often used in massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) to farm for resources that would otherwise take significant time or effort to obtain; this is a concern for most online in-game economies.
The most widely used anti-bot technique is the use of CAPTCHA, which is a form of Turing test used to distinguish between a human user and a less-sophisticated AI-powered bot, by the use of graphically encoded human-readable text.
Several web sites such as TrueCheaters.com are dedicated to writing bots to help give the members of their community advantages in a variety of things on the internet"

Those bots that posts spam link, porn pics, malicious contents etc. are called 'spam bots' which is different from the bots you're currently having on your forum(google, yahoo and bing), this bots are essential for putting your web into the search engines as we mentioned above and it doesn't harm your forum,

It's the spam bots who can post spam on a forum and can be prevented by having CAPTCHA as mentioned by the article you provided above Wink
