HTML in Signatures no longer working? - Page 2 Empty HTML in Signatures no longer working?

Post by 19CenturyWBTS August 24th 2010, 5:49 pm

First topic message reminder :

Greetings ladies and gentlemen,

I've stumbled into this odd problem today as suddenly the html code my members use in their signature doesn't work any longer. I haven't changed anything so I assume some changes might have been made by the fourmotion team.

Anyway below is an example of the code I've been using for almost an entire year without any problems:

Code:

< img src="http://i32.servimg.com/u/f32/14/42/99/47/no7_110.png" hspace="8" align="left" height="72" alt="CAPT" title="Captain"/>[b][i]Captain[/i] Hiram Barton[/b]
Commanding Officer - 1st US Fleet
US Navy
-- United States of America --
——————————————————————
[size=11]"[i]Democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people.[/i]" [b][i]- Oscar Wilde -[/i][/b][/size]

But suddenly - if used in a signature - the picture embedded within the code is no longer utilizing the html code and a test has revealed that the signature is changing the above code to the following suddenly if one hits save or preview:

Code:
[img]http://i32.servimg.com/u/f32/14/42/99/47/no7_110.png[/img][b][i]Captain[/i] Hiram Barton[/b]
Commanding Officer - 1st US Fleet
US Navy
-- United States of America --
——————————————————————
[size=11]"[i]Democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people.[/i]" [b][i]- Oscar Wilde -[/i][/b][/size]

You may notice that it has changed the usual <img scr****> code with the [IMG]-tag automatically and refuses to display the other code as it had done without problems all the months before. I'm at a loss to solve the problem as I've enabled HTML and it has always worked up until now. I'd appreciate any help here. Thank you!

==============
In here I also had to put a space in the <img scr***> code piece to get it displayed within the BBCode code "tag"! Until resolved I've been forced to disable signatures on our rpg forum.

Is this problem (regarding attached signatures in PMs that have their HTML formatting screwed automatically) by any chance being looked into? I've being asked about this matter several times already by our game members... - ...I'd be glad about any comment from the staff so I'm able to forward it to the members of my game. Thank you!

Hi Kirk, thank you for your reply - alas that code doesn't work at all at my forum. It screws up the normal signature straight away (which my old code doesn't do) after hitting "save" or "preview". It seems strange that my old code worked for a year now perfectly well both with normal postings and in PMs and suddenly things have changed. I'm glad that the normal postings + attached signature have been fixed, but it's beyond my understanding why it doesn't seem to work with PM now as well like it has done before. I've to repeat I didn't change any setting on my forum and didn't change any of the code for signatures. Can't this be fixed so it works again like it has done? I truly hope so.

May be it's a browser thing.
i mean ask rono he can tell you that a lot of codeing that used to work fine on certain browsers dont work the same anymore.. it could be a some part to do with forumotion updates.. but i think it would be leaned more towards the browser companies too.

so anyway i am going to test a few more things i will install opera as well.
that will bring me up to 5 browsers now.. it's ridiculous how often i have to switch browser to have certain things appare or work anymore.. these companies really need to get there stuff together and start being a lil more compatible with each other.. because it's becoming rather annoying Sad

other then that i will have to send the thread link to luky to take a look at and see if he can pass it along to typlo to have a tech look into this.

i think there is a thread in the office about this too so i will see if there are any updates about it as well.

First off thank you very, very much Kirk for taking care of this matter and trying to figure out what's wrong!

To aid you I've to say that I'm currently running the Opera Version 10.61 (which should be the newest version) - also there hasn't been any update prior to the appearance of the problems with the HTML and BBCode so I'm unsure if they are responsible(I know because I never automatically update, but like to do it manually).

To help you I'll give you an update about the situation and what works and what doesn't:

  • Normal forum posting using html and/or BBCode formatting in the "Message body" work fine and without any problems again

  • Normal forum postings with automatically attached signatures that are formatted with html and BBCode work fine again [as noted in the postings above that problem has been fixed]

  • PMs (Private Messages) using html and/or BBCode formatting in the "Message body" seem to work fine again!

  • PMs (Private Messages) with automatically attached signatures (that are formatted with html and BBCode) don't work, the formatting gets screwed up and thus aren't displayed correctly

That's pretty interesting isn't it - since if you copy our standard signature into the PM's "Message body" it is displayed according to the html / BBCode formatting; but if you attach the same signature (of course using the very same html / BBCode formatting) the formatting is destroyed due to unknown reasons. And things do work fine with standard forum postings both in the message body and with the attached signatures...

Is there any news about the hunt for a solution for this problem? The PMs with attached signatures still do not work.

Checked today again and this is still not working as it should be - must be a rather serious technical problem if it can't be solved easily?!

HTML in Signatures no longer working? - Page 2 Empty Re: HTML in Signatures no longer working?

Post by 19CenturyWBTS September 21st 2010, 3:37 pm

Since the issue is still around I've tried to fix this myself and strange enough have come up with a quite UNUSUAL method to fix it. My tests have revealed that the HTML code for pictures in the signature get automatically changed from the <img scr="..."> tag to the BBCode [IMG] tag, hence screwing up things badly.

So for example this:
Code:
<img src="http://i62.servimg.com/u/f62/11/22/70/40/750px-10.png" hspace="8" align="left" height="72" alt="test" title="Test"/><b><i>Test</i> John Doe</b>
Bla Bla
Bla Bla
-- United States of America --
——————————————————————
"[i]Quote![/i]" - Quoted Person -

Gets automatically changed to:
Code:
[img]http://i62.servimg.com/u/f62/11/22/70/40/750px-10.png" hspace="8" align="left" height="72" alt="test" title="Test"[/img]<b><i>Test</i> John Doe</b>
Bla Bla
Bla Bla
-- United States of America --
——————————————————————
"[i]Quote![/i]" - Quoted Person -

And since BBCode is unable to use HTML Tag attributes the result is a major screwup! Now I thought: "What if I start out with the already changed code, but leave the html attributes that are used by the html <img scr"..." /> tag in the code (something that normally would get any IT guy probably laughing out loud and telling me I'm an idiot). And you know what? Defying any reason or sense this WORKED for BOTH PMs and normal postings!

But this is a crazy workaround is not really fixing the technical problem itself as it remains and should be addressed by someone from the tech team as there has to be a reason for this unwanted automatic change of HTML & BBCode. I happen to notice the same happening if one switches between the "WYSIWYG" editing mode and the normal editing mode because in that case HTML image tags get exchanged as well (but are not changed back).

So what could be the problem and will it be fixed anytime soon? Since the workaround I've come up with isn't really the best option.
