Best Mod To Stop Spam On Forums Empty Best Mod To Stop Spam On Forums

Post by Master Marc September 3rd 2010, 3:03 am

Hello forum members,

Once again, I have a new suggestion that would help forumotion forum owners manage spam on their forums.

This is an effective mod, which stops spammers from joining your forum, etc.

It basically checks StopForumSpam.com for IPs, user names, emails, etc, and if it finds anything, they disallow the person from joining the forums.

Link To Mod : http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=176481 ( this is for vBulletin / just an example )

As I said, it's very effective and would protect your forum from spammers ( bots ). I suggest that the techs add something similar to this to all forumotion forums.

What do you think about this suggestion?

I actually started going thru stopforumsapm.com and entered the IP addresses into banned IP's on my forum so this would be very useful.

This would disallow all IPs, emails, user names, etc, that were submitted to StopForumSpam , from joining your forum.

You can choose which options to enable, etc. Here is a screen shot of the real thing, Wink

Okay, it could even ban out genuine users if their IP's are posted on that site.

So i voted no.

That is indeed my main worry too :/
Is there some sort of back-plan or something? Because it is guaranteed there will eventually be some shithead who'll enter a normal user's I.P

True.
I would rather clean the spam manually with staff than to use a system, wherein genuine users too get affected.

If the person isn't using a proxy which has been submitted as a spammer, then they wouldn't be affected.

I'm sure that normal members that doesn't spam, wouldn't be listed on that site.

And, this is for forumotion forums that gets spam a lot. ( example : forumotion support forum )

Members even suggested for a censor of some sort to reduce the spam, because they hated it, so I'm suggesting it, Wink

A normal word censor wouldn't do well. This is very effective & would stop all spammers ( with their IPs listed ) from joining a forum to spam.

Agreed, but taking a list of IP's from a database wherein the whole world can submit is too risky.

I would rather have a version by Forumotion.

Moreover, Forumotion gets approximately 10-15 posts of spam a day. Considering, a 42000+ members forum & the activity it is very less.

The staff handles the spam as quickly as possible, so i don't see a reason for this system to be implemented. There is a huge drawback with the mod you suggested. We are definitely better off with it. Smile

Okay then, but you can submit your own URL if you don't like StopForumSpam.com's database.

See This ScreenShot :

The last field, Very good

Edit :

I'm not 100% sure about this because I've only tested it out for StopForumSpam.com ...

I only agree with what has been said above. I think that by having this system you are only putting a high risk on block innocent people from your forum.

The main problem with this is that if someone is going to spam a forum then they will always use a proxy so that they can't be traced and the next time they spam they can just use another ip address.

It can be changed. ( but they only said that because StopForumSpam is the main black list site )

Plus, we can't use vBulletin mods on our forumotion forums, lol.

The techs can design a mod with features similar to this, and add it on our forums. ( Plus, you don't have to enable it )

There is a log that keeps record of the people that are signing up. ( IPs, emails, user names, etc... )

It's all part of the mod. ( that's why it's one of the best spam protection mods ever )

It shows you if the person was accepted to join the forums or not... ( if the person was rejected, you can always email the person to fix the problem )

All sites normally do keep logs of IP's emails, usernames etc. That does not make it the best.

As a user if i try to join some random site & it says you are not allowed to access this forum or any other such message, do you think i will be bothered to email the owner? No one in this world has the time to go through the hassles unless they are really desperate to join that forum & can't live without it.

And, StopForumSpam.com doesn't accept fake details. You have to provide valid details to get the person listed in the backlist.

So, if you've never spammed a forum, then this mod wouldn't disallow visitors from joining a forum.

And, there is always the enable/disable button, Very good

Forumotion does let you see IP's, usernames, emails etc. Its just not while registering. But, does it really matter? because only when someone makes a post that we know if its spammer or a normal user.

It won't accept fake details? What if a human is entering IP's of some user.

For example: From forumotion, i can easily get your IP, your username. I can just join stopForumspam.com & fill in your details, which makes you banned from other sites? Whats fake in that? All are valid details right?

True, there is a enable/disable button. I would rather let Forumotion work on their own spam avoiding system than to use this way. Smile

Well, there should be a feature to log IPs on registration.

It isn't so easy : http://www.stopforumspam.com/add

And if someone wanted your IP address, then they'd get it. ( you don't have to be staff of a forum to get it, Wink )

This is just an idea to something Forumotion can create. They can't copy the exact thing.

Here is the same mod for phpBB : http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=1349145

I don't even thing that ForuMotion can use it because they use an old version of phpBB for all of our forums...

True if someone wants a IP address they would get it anyhow, no need to be staff. I was giving you an example. lol

So thats what i am trying to say, the earlier suggested thread does the same for them to create a new system. This thread serves no purpose to show an example of how it should be done.
