Solved Problem user

Post by chino40k November 28th 2010, 2:43 am

Hi,

My friends run a small forum with a few hundred registered users.

Several weeks ago, a new user joined who later started to post pictures of pornography and nudity. The site moderators removed the images and I came onto these forums to clarify what was and wasn't acceptable.

The site moderators then posted an announcement on their forum to say any user posting such images would have the pictures deleted and they would be banned. It was thought this was the end of it.

In the past week a new user joined the forum and spammed threads with abuse and general offensive behaviour. Then in the past couple of days there have been two forum abuses reported, the first claiming the forum was filled with pornography and the second abuse claiming illegal activities and cyber bullying.

The forum admins were able to determine that the user carrying out the offensive behaviour was the same user who had been posting pornography a few weeks previously. Through a google search the forum admins found the user (with his original username) had posted on a hacker forum asking how to hack the forum, as well as posting on other forums claiming a cyber attack was planned by my friends and was encouraging people to spam then report the forum to get it shut down.

Users post on hacker site (it appears the thread has been deleted):
Problem user Thermo11

Users post on another forum (same post appearing on two other forums as well):
http://www.toffeetalk.com/index.php?/topic/22031-a-warning-red-shite-attack/

My friends created a thread on their forum calling out this user, and he confessed to being the same vindictive person with two usernames, that he had reported two abuses, used the hacker forum and posted in other forums. The forum moderators then banned both his accounts and locked down the forum so admins had to approve new registrations. In the hours following, this now banned user tried to register using 3 or 4 different email addresses and usernames (same ip address each time) but was stopped from joining.

My friends are now concerned that this user will continue his attack against the forum and do his up most to get it taken down. They would like to know whether or not there could be further repercussions because of this persons actions, in regards to reporting the forum and general idiocy on other sites.

Is their only sensible course of action to keep the forum locked down for a few days and manually approve all new registrations? My friends would be greatly disappointed if one person is able to take down a community they've spent a lot of time trying to build up.

What I do to take down hackers and people like this is to just tell your other users to stay offline for a while, then only allow posting, viewing, etc. to admins and moderators. That will prevent any new members from posting new topics and eventually the hacker will leave. Hasn't let me down so far. Smile

Just make it where users need to be activated when they register by going to User & Groups // User Option // Who can activate accounts // Admin

This why you will know who is what and you can prevent any more spammers. I would also recommend you make your passwords and ask your staff to change their password with random characters with under and lower case and numbers.

Thank you for your help.

Should my friends be concerned about the possibility of the problem user reporting the forum directly to forumotion? They don't want to be wrongly shut down.

As long as you remove it, your forum shouldn't get shut down Wink

Thank you.

So my friends have nothing to worry about as long as the claims remain frivolous. They will be pleased that an idiot with a vendetta can't bring the forum down.

Please close this thread / mark as solved.
