How to start designing

Hey Forummotion,

If I wanted to start learning how to create my own buttons and ranks and stuff like that where would be a good resource or web page that could start teaching me that stuff and what program should I use. I know there are a lot of programs out there but wanted to know what would be recommended by the designers around here.
