How do we ban spammers / unwanted members!

Post by sirg0508 on 27/9/2006, 02:27

Recently our forum has been hit but a lot a unwanted members. The first one we noticed was a problem as was advertising gay porn in their signature and profile but we caught them straight away and had them deleted.

We manually validate all accounts but now we are getting those advertising medicine etc. We know they join sites but never post as we've seen the same happening on other forums where they were getting 100+ unwanted members a day (we're 'lucky' getting about 2 a day).

We now have to activate them as members because they do not show as new users in the memberlist unless we do and cannot check their profiles to know the e-mail addresses being set up... this in effect means they know they can join because they receive an e-mail saying the account has been activated and the reason we get so many now.

Once activated and we see their e-mail address e.g. is mail1@yourmedserv.info or mail1@medicinese.info if we change the option to 'Banni' it does nothing - we still get more!

I just checked the banned IP list today and considering we've 'Banni'd at least 20 members there are only 3 IPs in the list.

What more has to be done? We don't know their IP addresses because they never post on the forum Evil or Very Mad ... but several of them have similar usernames/e-mail addresses so must be the same person. Mad

Any help grateful! We'd like to get the problem under control now rather than later.

Hello

Have you read this topic? It might be useful :

Alas, all you can do is ban this member (if it's the same one) again and again, he'll grow tired of creating e-mail adresses Wink

Thanks - we haven't deleted any of the members as I read about that before (must have been that post) but still hasn't made a difference Sad
