Jquery or Javascript?

I recently got a job in AkzoNobel Chemical Industries with a great package plus a great deal of time. So I want to learn something useful in this free time but I can make up my mind whether Jquery or Javascript. Would like Dion to & anklien to help me out here...

Jquery IS Javascript. Its basically a library of javascript functions loaded in the head of your page.

I'd suggest learning Javascript before jQuery. Jquery can be learnt in a few days if you already know javascript. Plus whilst using jQuery you will often need javascript too.

Plus tell me that for instance we engineers use MatLab & Maple like application which are built on Java; similarly is Jdownloader. Is the development of such application requires the same java knowledge as for web coding?
