Is there a post limit?

Someone on my forum made a topic that had over a thousand posts, and suddenly the thing split into two topics on its own. One has 990, the other has 110. I checked and no one split the topic, and the one with more posts is locked too. No one locked it either. When I try merging them and unlocking it, it doesn't work. Is this some kind of post limit to how many posts can be on one topic? If so, is there any way to change it?

Yeah, there is a limit and it will automatically split. I believe you can't change that. Sorry, mate.

Yes indeed the post limit of a topic is 990 posts, our system automatically split it and 10 posts create a new thread.
