Spambot countermeasures

I was wondering if this was on the ACP somewhere and I was missing it or if I don't have access to it?

What I wanted was something like this:

During account registration, one of the fields to be filled in would ask: "What is the capital of Wisconsin?" and the user would have to answer "Madison" etc. If the answer is incorrect, they would fail to register.

Any more info anyone needs let me know!

Custom forms aren't allowed for registration, but you can set permissions for new users that they're automatically placed into one usergroup which can only see a certain forum where they must answer a question of your choice, that has been a solution to previous topics like this.
You can use the search feature to look for already existing answers to this

An option in the ACP is already set as well to block people who sign up with the most common spam usernames.

I know there are things I can do to restrict it like that, but I also know that phpBB has the feature I'm looking for, I think it's just disabled for forumotion forums for some reason.

One of my friends has his own phpBB forum and he told me this:

phpBB natively supports exactly what you want. Go to ACP, Spambot countermeasures, select Q&A from installed plugins, and then hit configure. Then after you're done configuring, make sure to Submit on the spambot countermeasures page to update the plugin to use.

I'm also have ACP access on his forum and can see exactly where it "should be" so I was wondering if it was hidden somewhere else in the ACP that I'm not finding it or if it is disabled on forumotion for some reason.

(PS It's under: ACP > General > Board Configuration > Spambot countermeasures > Available plugins > Q&A)

Also, if it's just a matter of me needing to install the plugin, does anyone know where I can find it? Because my friend said it should natively come with phpBB.

Ah,

Forumotion uses PhpBB software but it is edited to suit the needs of the Forumotion company, you cannot install pulgins or addons from the phpBB website.

Alright, is it possible that it could be edited to allow us to use this feature? I'm not sure why it's disabled in general since it helps prevent spam bots.

At least I would think it could be an option for people to choose if they want to use anti-spambot measures.

Also you should know forumotion does have quite a few methods of preventing spam on the forums. It even will censor some words that are commonly used by spam bots and make them enter a CAPTCHA before allowing them to post that post.

You can check under ACP--->General-->Security

This has some anti spam features you can view and turn on/off.

Most common bot names really isn't that helpful when most spam bots now have random usernames. Also according to this topic by phpBB (https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=2122696) CAPTCHA really isn't that helpful. They SUGGEST using the native phpBB Q&A option for spambot measures.

Do admins only look in that section? I think this topic fits better in the ACP problems.

Forumtion also have behind the scenes stuff preventing spam. I've worked on various forumotion forums and spamming has been rare of an issue and easily dealt with by deleting/banning/ip banning the person who's done it.

Are you being attacked by spam on your forum?

EDIT: Yes both admins and techs look at this section.

Also it isn't really a problem as such now is it?

Not "attacked" really, just a couple, but I was just wanting to implement something that would prevent it in the future.

Can an admin comment on why this feature is currently blocked? I mean, if there is a specific reason why, I'll understand, I'm just curious what downside it has to forumotion that they disable the feature natively installed in phpBB.

Well there isn't really a way to prevent spam fully but it only happens rarely normally.

The reason it is "blocked" as you put it is that forumotion uses a modified version of phpbb so that admin control panel is different because FM is a free hosting site.

I'm sure a staff member will come along and comment as well

Oh, I know that it can't be fully protected, but the questions I will use in the Q&A function are unique to a specific smallish community game, so I doubt bots will be able to guess them. I realized they edit things out because it's a free hosting site, it just really surprised me that this is one of the things they edited out.
