Remove editor background image

Post by invisible_fa on August 14th 2013, 2:16 am

Hello.

I`ve just noticed that now, when we want to write a reply / topic, an image is shown in the background (the monster and the text "help!" )

From my point of view this is not good, because it makes diffiicult to see what you are writting (when you are writting in the zone wich is just over the image, I mean)

So I would say that I prefer the editor without the background image, just as it cames by default.

While it can distract, I don't think it needs to be removed completely. I just think the opacity needs to be decreased a bit more on the image, by at least 50%. I did a quick edit to experiment.

Example: http://i74.servimg.com/u/f74/18/21/41/30/ex10.png

Vote no, leave it it's nice, though opacity can be a bit lover.

Yes, I agree. I was either thinking A or B when I was editing. Personally I like A more since its not TOO light.

Re: Remove editor background image

Post by Derri on August 14th 2013, 7:30 pm

I'll admit my opinion on this is completely bias because when I am editing my reviews the image does make the text hard to read. I do my reviews in a word document but then I upload it section by section into the post and I fix the formatting and give it one finial proofread and I really struggle to view some of the text when its around the image. So I'd be up for having it removed.

This is what can be done :)We can add opactiy to the image. However it'll make the font color turn grayish, which probably will be another reason for you guys to not like this idea. Another solution would be adding font-weight: bolder;

 all you have to do is make the logo at the back more lighter " IE" fade it more like  water mark then the text will not fade out aswell Wink

Or another solution would be not to have it at all Razz. I mean I don't think not having it would damage the overall appearance of the forum. I'd honestly prefer not to have it and just be able to read the text easily. I mean it does look nice, don't get me wrong, I think it looks nice but the minute text goes over it, is the minute it becomes problematic.

I think it looks good and can not really see a problem with it my self i can see the text ok maybe it's just a small problem when the screen is a little dark.

The watermark or fade will fix that thou,

I also wanted to add I find it quite hard to read the text I'm typing when in the quick reply box as well.

So I'm still sticking with no.

How about just making the image lighter, so we can see the text while typing?

Agreed, all that needs to be changed is the image, or image opacity. I had examples above and I found A to look best while being visible, but not making it hard to read text. B is the opposite of A being less visible, but still making text easy to be read.

A:

Well the thing is some people who have dyslexia and other similar problems can't ready black text on a coloured background very well as they struggle with black and white so I think without the image would be a much easier solution for most people.

I mean all the text editor image is, is a bit of glorified art that doesn't actually need to be there.

I agree, the background image is a distraction and is not needed. Also it is difficult to make post as it is in the way. I say they should remove it.

I vote to remove it, I find it very distracting at any opacity. Its hard to read your writing, and when that happens its a functionality issue. Appearance should never take priority over functionality.

I don't particularly like that green monster logo anyway. Remove the blasted thing.. lol

I think setting the opacity is a good idea, might I suggest adding this code to the css selector.. lol

Code:
opacity:0.0;
filter:alpha(opacity=0);
Result:
.

.
.

.
.

Just kidding, actually I'm starting to get used to it.. Smile

i think the best compromise would be to go with the middle image Seth posted as it is still visible but light enough not to obscure the type and i would think it would be easier for the people with reading disorders as Derri pointed out

Re: Remove editor background image

Post by Ange Tuteur on October 2nd 2013, 7:49 pm

Yes, but there may be some issues still, which is why I've added a category C now. C is the lightest of all of them which makes it absolutely subtle and optional to look at.

A:
THIS IS TEXT

B:
THIS IS TEXT

C:
THIS IS TEXT

Current:
THIS IS TEXT

You can see the difference in text/background contrast is drastic, readability is a must when adding images to a background that text is displayed on.

Might as well not have any image at all if you go with C. My eyes may not be the greatest but I can barely see that with a magnifying glass. I think removing the image altogether is the best way to go.

I believe you may be right, I do find it a pain when I'm writing and the text becomes hard to read due to the background image we currently have.
