Hiding Posts

Post by Tilum on February 15th 2009, 7:31 pm

First topic message reminder :

Hello All,

On some forums that i am a member on, it is possible to hide a post. This would remove the name of the author and all of the message. This would make moderating easy as you wouldn't have to edit a post to say "Content Removed" All you would do is press a button to hide the post. Also, the post that you hid would not be uneditable to stop members editing moderation comments out and putting offensive content back in.

Example:
Lets say that a member posted a swear word, this swear word was "Boo", so a moderator came along and was like, OH he just posted "Boo" i'm going to have to hide that, so the moderator:

a) Inserted the [Hide] Tags. Members posted after this and then saw the swear word "Boo". Also, the member who posted "Boo" cam back from his 24hr ban and edited the post, removed the tags and put "Boo" back in.

b) Hid the post, all he had to do was hit one button. Members that posted after the moderators post didn't see anything, it was all fine. When the member came back from his 24hr ban, he went to edit his post to replace "Boo" and noticed that there wasn't an edit button! The word did not re appear.

That's a made up example, but can you remember when that disgusting member who came and posted all the graphic pictures of car crash victims? Skittles, who was the moderator at the the time, has to go through editing all of the pictures and replacing it with => Removed etc, all she would have had to have done was press Hide, and it would be gone!

As you can see, it is easier to hide the post, than delete it as this would cause confusion.
If you have any questions please post below.

Thanks for reading,
Tilum

I don't understand how this is easier than pushing a simple delete button, please explain and then I will vote.

I like this idea, although I think the post should remain as it is except the body will have a message that says "Content hidden by a Moderator.".

Hi, I'm new and out of all the things I enjoy from the forum I have created with Forumotion recently, this is the one thing that I'd really like. In fact, I joined this forum to suggest the very same thing. On other forums I've worked on, we call it "making a post invisible" for the very purpose of spammers or members who start causing trouble.

Sometimes, you need to hide a post that goes against your forum rules, but need the post to still be in the forum so that your admins/mods can decide what to do with the member.

Very nice idea, but would this work for the first post? Say if the user goes back and edits it, but a good discussion is going, so there is no point deleting the topic? ~ Yes.

Yeah, deleting a post confuses members, it breaks up the convo, therefore if a mod hides it, you know there is a post. Yeah, would work for first post as well, but it would be a rare occurrence for a post to be hidden that would originally be a good discussion Wink

You could just delete the post! I voted no because you don't even need to type removed. I'm sure the poster knows why is was removed or deleted he doesn't need to be told. I find this useless

You'd be surprised how many people still question why their post was deleted, especially when doing something against rules wasn't intentional. And if mods or admins change in a forum, sometimes rules change with them.

Sometimes, a mod might questions a post, hide it, and then rules change to allow the hidden post to be made seen again. If you delete the post, you can't bring it back. Having the ability to make it hidden just in case you need to make it visible again, is a needed function.

Yep, the comment shown

"Content of this message have been hidden" could also be edited by the moderator.

"Contests of this message have been hidden for breaking rule 10."

But what if they don't? Then they go and make another topic to ask why that post was removed, then that topic will be closed, then they will ask again. Just a snowball effect.

Why not just give moderators the rights to delete the posts?

Why mess around with hiding them?

Hey,

A deleted post can't be undone. This way it can be hidden and then unhidden if needed, deleted posts also cause confusion because there is a gap in a topic.
