Solved html pages - problem with IE

Post by felicity4us2 June 19th 2011, 11:39 pm

The html pages that we have added are showing up in IE as a long string of words on the left side of the page. In other browsers they are showing correctly.

A few of the html pages are working correctly on IE, so I copied those codes over to the ones that were lined up along the left side.

Strange - when I 'preview' in IE - it is correct, but after I submit - it is as if I made no changes at all. I have put in over an hour trying to fix this.

Can you help?

http://www.igdid.com/

Okay - this is an edit. I posted to members about this - apologizing - and got answers like, 'can't get paragraph breaks', and other problems when using IE. Is it best to just tell ppl to use another browser than go and make changes to over 100 html pages? Or is there a 'fix' for these problems?

Thanks, Felicity

Solved Re: html pages - problem with IE

Post by Guest June 21st 2011, 8:01 am

The problem isn't Internet Explorer. The problem is that your HTML pages have so many errors in them, I'm surprised they display at all!

In the one you referenced above, the <div class="body" tag is missing the closing > character. That's a serious error and may be why the page will not display in IE.

You also have many cases of tags incorrectly nested, which will cause different types of problems with each browser. And finally, the DOCTYPE is HTML5 XHTML 1.0/Transitional, which means the <br> tag is invalid (should be using the <br /> tag instead), and the <font> and <center> tags are unsupported.

Looks like you have a lot of work to do...

Yep, it is okay - I can do it. Thank you so much. Rather have them correct than leave them and 'hope' they display. I kept trying to 'fix' them without really knowing where the problem was.

Again, thank you.

Here's a start. This is your starting block of HTML for the main text:

Code:
<div class="maintitle">Dissociative Identity Disorder Support </h3><div class="body"<br><center><br><font face="Monotype Corsiva" size="4"><br>Ivory Gardens Dissociative Identity Disorder <br><br>Coping & Ground Skills Techniques/Ideas<br></font></center></h3><br><br>
Try this instead:

Code:
<div class="maintitle"><h3>Dissociative Identity Disorder Support<br /><br />Ivory Gardens Dissociative Identity Disorder<br /><br />Coping & Ground Skills Techniques/Ideas</h3></div><div class="body" style="font-family:'Monotype Corsiva'">

dunno i cant get to work in IE at all,

IT'S BULL.. IE is garbage.. because have it work and lined up perfect in every other browswer.

may be to many tables and the other things-that dion pointed out,

But honestly why are you even doing this on a html page when you cant set the portal up like this

My biggest problem is that anything I change is not showing up on IE - it does in the preview, but then when I submit - it is as if I did nothing. This happened a long time ago when we were building the board too - Is it like 'behind' or something? A few pages did change when I made the corrections, but then they stopped. And IE gives me an error box that it is closing the program. arggg sorry to be a pest.

How are you previewing the HTML pages before submitting them? There is no preview mode...

If you're turning on the HTML editor to preview, then I think I know your problem. Don't turn on the HTML editor -- leave it off. The HTML editor is buggy and will change your code in ways you do NOT want it changed!

Solved Re: html pages - problem with IE

Post by Guest June 22nd 2011, 1:50 am

Kirk, IE is not "garbage"...given the HTML errors, it's rendering the page correctly -- meaning looking awful. Opera renders the page the same way. It's the Gecko/Webkit browsers that are at fault...they're trying to render a page with fatal errors by making guesses as to the intent of the author.

This is why I like using an HTML validator.

(Personally, I consider IE9 to be a better browser than Chrome. It has fewer rendering errors and is MUCH better for novices...)

i disagree?
because i had it working fine in all browsers accept IE..
and when your creating a html page there is a preview tab you can click that opens the whole page in the preview.

Solved Re: html pages - problem with IE

Post by felicity4us2 June 22nd 2011, 2:17 am

I am sorry - I don't use the html editor at all - it doesn't work Smile

Yeah - the preview shows fine - but, then it is like IE crashes or something - and when hit submit - every change is just gone.

I have a few strands of hair left, so I am going through and trying to see if at least some of the articles will fix. I fixed the guidelines and the chat box and a few more important ones at least. Maybe, I am trying something that isn't possible and should just tell everyone they need to use another browser. ?? It is hard enough when I don't know that much - but this is aggravated.

Okay, I am seeing a problem now. If I make changes in IE, they don't show up when I go back to FF, hmmm. Even though they are 'submitted'. Didn't know bout using a portal page when we started - didn't expect to end up with so many pages.

I am very unhappy with IE right now - haven't used that browser in more than 10 years. Like SeaMonkey best

Best, Felicity

Solved Re: html pages - problem with IE

Post by kirk June 22nd 2011, 3:16 am

dude i dont know what it is, i have been messing with it for the last couple hours.

so i got it to work on IE Almost perfect, but then every other browser it was screwed

Everything is fine in dreamweaver, with the previews etc.. i was adjusting it and went easy, until having it on the page with IE.

so there is defiantly some kind of coding conflicting somewhere,
i dont know what it is? i tried an number of things, everything from uploading some java files to a java host to inserting the css.

and what it comes down to is, it seems to work the way you have it on all browsers but IE. but as soon as you fix it to appear right on IE, then it's all messed up on the other browsers.

do you have the blank lay out with no content in it?.

try taking the header and footer out, dont display it as the option for the html page and see what happens.. if it's better then you will just have to add the header and footer in custom.

and now what i almost had perfect before on IE is messed up again and even worse with the other browsers... LOL
Oh well i'll try again latter with a fresh head.

Solved Re: html pages - problem with IE

Post by felicity4us2 June 22nd 2011, 3:25 am

I think that is what I did to get the code I am using. It brings up that header bar and the background -

Whew, I got about 5 of them to work now. The guidelines - thank goodness and the chatrooms. But I use the same exact code on others - I put it in FF and then, go to IE - even restarting it and the change does not take there.

Thank you for all of your help. This will eat at me for awhile. I just posted for folks to use another browser. It is amazing how many still use IE.

Again - a big thanks. I can use any help I can get. Smile:

Best to you all,

Solved Re: html pages - problem with IE

Post by Guest June 22nd 2011, 4:20 am

Look...the problem is your HTML coding. You will continue to have these problems until you fix the code in your HTML pages, but more importantly, fix the code in your widgets. In your widgets you have extra </div> and </center> tags, have tags that aren't nested properly, and even have multiple ID definitions that would cause your CSS to have serious problems.

Before you pull your hair out, turn off your widgets and see if things display properly. If they do, then start fixing the code in your widgets before you spend any more time with your HTML pages.

As a test, here is the /h24- file you referenced above, fixed of all errors, and formatted for easy reading. If you put this in an HTML file, set it to display the header/footer, and still have problems, then please fix your widgets!

Code:
<div class="module borderwrap">
    <div class="maintitle">
        <h3>Dissociative Identity Disorder</h3>
    </div>
    <div class="box-content">
        <br />
        <br />
        Ivory Gardens Dissociative Identity Disorder <br />
        <br />
        Coping & Grounding Skills Techniques/Ideas<br />
        <br />
        Grounding is a way of helping yourself cope with stressful periods in you life. While the intrusive symptoms of traumatic stress – like flashbacks, memories, and upsetting thoughts – cannot always be stopped, you can learn techniques that will minimize their impact. Grounding techniques can help you regain a sense of safety and control in your life. They can help you anchor yourself in the here and now and keep you from getting lost in the past.<br />
        <br />
        Below you will find a description of several grounding techniques.** One (or more) of these techniques is likely to suit you better than the others. Choose the technique that you would like to focus on and practice it regularly, especially when you are feeling well. If you become good at using the technique during non-crisis times, you will be better equipped to use it when you are in crisis.<br />
        <br />
        Seated Grounded Posture: This is a posture in which both feet are on the floor and your spine is straight, but not rigidly so. In this posture, you are actively aware of your body’s existence and its connection to the ground. Your legs should be uncrossed – this allows the flow of energy to pass freely through the body. Your hands may be resting on your thighs or on the arms of the chair. Your head is held high. Notice the way your body rests in the chair; notice the way your feet are resting on the ground. This is a posture that can allow you to feel both strong and at ease.<br />
        <br />
        Mindful Walking: Walk carefully, mindfully around the room. Mindful walking can be slow or brisk. The goal is to be fully present with each step as you take it. Bring your attention to the actual sensations of walking. Notice how the heel, then the ball of your foot makes contact with the floor as you walk. Notice the bend in your knees, the flex in your toes, the shift in your weight with each step you take. When your attention wanders, bring it back to your walking. Center yourself in your body and be present in the moment. Count ten steps, and ten more, and ten more, until you feel calmed.<br />
        <br />
        Writing / Saying Grounding Statements: Develop several grounding statements that remind you that you are safe and provide you with comfort. You may want to write the statements on a small piece of paper or “flashcard” and carry them around in your wallet. You may want to write the statement on a larger piece of paper that you will hang on a wall in your home. Write your statements in a color that represents safety and strength to you. You can say the statements out loud, or simply read or think them. Examples of grounding statements include: - “This feeling will soon pass.” - “You are no longer a child. You are an adult now, and you are safe.” - “You are strong; you are safe now.”<br />
        <br />
        Develop your own grounding statements, ones that have special meaning for you.<br />
        <br />
        Grounding Through Breathing: The breath serves wonderfully as a focus for your attention. Think of it as an anchor that holds you in the present moment and guides you back to the here and now when your mind wanders to the past. By bringing awareness to your breathing, you are reminding yourself that you are here now. Breathe in and attend to the feeling of breathing in; breathe out and attend to the feeling of breathing out. You may want to focus on the air coming in and out of your nostrils or on your abdomen expanding and contracting as you breathe. You may want to count ten breaths on the exhale, and keep counting groups of ten breaths until you feel calmed. You may also want to use calming, grounding statements as you breathe, like:<br />
        - Inhaling, “I am breathing in calm.” or “ I am breathing in good energy.”<br />
        - Exhaling, “I am breathing out anxiety,” or “I am breathing out bad energy,” or “I am safe.”<br />
        <br />
        Other Grounding Techniques<br />
        - Dance and/or sing to a song that makes you feel good.<br />
        - Stamp your feet. Feel the power in your legs.<br />
        <br />
        - Visual grounding<br />
        * Make eye contact with a safe person.<br />
        * Scan the room to remind yourself that you are here now.<br />
        * Don’t direct your gaze downward: Look up, look out, look around.<br />
        <br />
        - Hold, look at, listen to and/or smell a grounding object. Grounding objects may be distinguished by their smell, shape, weight, sound, or texture. Any object that comforts you, that helps you to remember that you are in the present, rather than the past, can be a grounding object. Some examples are:<br />
        <br />
        * A smooth stone that you’ve found on the beach<br />
        * A bell that, when you ring it, has a soothing sound<br />
        * A piece of sandpaper with a course texture<br />
        * A photograph of a beautiful scene or of loved ones<br />
        * A small vial of a pleasant fragrance<br />
        * A piece of jewelry, like a ring or bracelet<br />
        * A picture that you’ve drawn of a scene that represents safety and comfort.<br />
        <br />
        You may want to hold, look at, smell, listen to your grounding object while engaged in one of the other grounding techniques. For example, you can hold your stone while repeating your grounding statements, while walking mindfully, or while doing grounding breathing. This way, you strengthen the grounding properties of your grounding object because it becomes associated with other experiences of comfort and safety. If your grounding object is small enough, you can carry it with you wherever you go. Knowing that you have access to a small oasis of calm and comfort right there can help.<br />
