Why don't you want a legend bar? If you don't have that you can't have usergroups.

Go to ACP > Display > Pics and Colors > Colors > CSS Stylesheet

Look for legend and apply hidden tags.

This works for me; put it at the end of your custom CSS.

ul#picture_legend li,ul#privmsgs-menu li {
display: none;
margin: 2px 10px;
}


If your legend pics were sitting on top of a background pic, use this to remove the bg pic:

ul#picture_legend {
background-position: center;
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-image: none;
text-align: CENTER;
padding: 24px 0;
}

Don't make the groups show up as closed or open. Make them all Hidden.
