As the title states, there's broken JS code in PHPBB3. I obviously can't fix it. Who do I go to about it?

My Wibiya bar doesn't work on Forumotion in IE, but it does work in IE on my Siteground site. I contacted support and they said the following:

Hi

I examine your website with a web debugger in IE8.
you have a javascript error in your website that seems to cause to this problem.
The errors are with this script :en.js
Please fix those errors and let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.
Thank you !

Com'on moderators, this isn't a rocket science question. Who's in charge of fixing (or taking fixes to the company) JS script in PHPBB3?

well whats wrong with the forum.
whats it doing or not doing. there is not going to be a broken script in your forum from forumotiom.
because if there was then a number of people would be reporting the same problem.

Have you added any new codeing, also have you tried backup and restore your forum to a previous date for what ever is happening.

You are going to have to explain the problem or problems that are happening so we can understand what is going on.

A IE8 Debugger means nothing without knowing whats going on.
And whats to say what ever is showing up with the IE8 is going to show up with a different browser.

So please explain in as much details exactly what is going on.

info added

i think it's your Wibyia bar. it shows up fine on FireFox.
but when i go to your site with IE8 I Get an error on the page and the Wibyia also dose not appear for me on IE8 as well.

So i think you will have to get a code that will be compatible with both FireFox and IE.
But things like this have often been a problem.. some things work on some browser while other things dont.

So what i would do is remove the bar.. then see if you still get errors.

As stated above, I have another PHPBB3 board on Siteground. The bar works perfectly in IE there. The code is Forumotion specific.

As I can't get to my templates, I can't tell you anything more than what the Wibiya support told me.

Most of my users use IE. Therefore, I need a board that will run what I want it to run in IE.

You have all the information I have. I have no other scripts installed at all. The problem is definitely purely Forumotion's coding - one they don't allow us to tweak.

Proof:

The site itself was an instant install so it's not perfect (and i really have only used it to test things so far).

But as you can see.... Wibiya bar in IE works great.

Conclusion - Forumotion error, in a place I as a user can't get to. That's all I know.

EDIT:
It also doesn't work in IE on my test site - which is also hosted by Forumotion and a PHPBB3. I have only ever changed the CSS in that site. Absolutely NO coding there. And the error is there as well.

The bar's been removed. But you can test that site with your debugger if you want.

well i am not sure,
can you post what ever the debugger is telling you.
i am at school right now on windows 7 and all is showing and working fine.

when i was home yesterday on vista and using ie8 the bar would not show. but when i went on Firefox it worked and appears fine.

So you will have to post the error/bug you are getting so it can be passed on to the techs.
but like i said a lot of people have had problems with this bar in the past for affecting other things on the forum.
Not everything is always going to be compatible with forumotion.. so may it could be that to. i really do not have a clue.
but if you post what ever error or what your bug report is telling you then i will be happy to pass it along for you Smile

oh if you like please post the code you have for the bar as well so i can test it with a few different versions browsers as well.

Two things. First, no hosted site will ever give you access to their system scripts. That simply isn't going to happen. There's a reason they're called SYSTEM scripts!

And second, even though the forumotion system script is VERY poorly written (it should be less then 1/3 its current size!!!), it works without errors on all browsers. On the other hand, the chatbox and text editor scripts have numerous browser-specific bugs in them.

If you're getting an error on the chatbox and/or text editor pages, then no doubt it's forumotion's fault. But based on my own experiences with the Wibiya toolbar, the problem is in the Wibiya script, not in the forumotion script. Yes, it may work elsewhere, but external scripts should be written in a way that makes them platform-independent. I've looked at the Wibiya code. It is not platform-independent.

You might have better luck with the toolbar if your board type was Invision -- it's the best board on forumotion to run external scripts without errors. (If you're technically-inclined and interested, I'll tell you why.) Why don't you make your test board Invision and try it out?

I host my new phpBB3 forum through Siteground. It's paid - but it's complete control. I have cPanel X as well as the boards CPU, access to the database, templates - everything.

I'm not getting the bug. I use firefox. But we are going to be relying pretty heavy on this bar for communication. If it works fine on my new site, that's all that matters, I guess.

As I've said before I'm not looking to fix it myself. I'm looking for the name of a person to tell "Hey, you may want to look into your script on PHPBB3 as there seems to be some issue that is specific to your host."

My wibiya bar code:
<script src=http://cdn.wibiya.com/Toolbars/dir_0627/Toolbar_627540/Loader_627540.js type=text/javascript></script>

As for trying out anything else - I don't have our main site's founder's permissions. I can only do what he asks. He want's the toolbar, and I need to know, from someone who WOULD know, if Forumotion is interested in even looking into a fix. That's something you guys can't tell me.

But, after seeing how Forumotion treats their people, we're no longer interested anyway.

I'm not affiliated with Wibiya or forumotion. I know a lot about javascript, however. After looking at the Wibiya toolbar code and all the forumotion scripts, I believe the problem you're having is in the Wibiya toolbar code, not in the forumotion system script. forumotion sets the groundrules, and as an external script, it's the toolbar's job to work within the groundrules. It doesn't.

And FYI, according to a friend of mine who runs a board on Zetaboards, the Wibiya toolbar has IE-specific problems there as well. How much would you like to bet that the Wibiya techs are blaming the Zetaboards problems on one of the Zetaboards system scripts? It's my guess that the Wibiya toolbar will have IE-specific problems on most (if not all) hosted/free board sites.

As I said in my previous post, if you reported a problem specific to the chatbox or text editor, I would 100% agree the problem is in the forumotion scripts -- the chatbox/editor scripts need an exterminator because there are so many bugs in them. But the forumotion system script, while bloated and slow, is surprisingly clean.
