Member bulk messaging other members as a guest
Hiya, would appreciate any help on this one.
On a forum im admin on, we have had messages from members saying another member has messaged them inviting them over to another forum, but, the member doing this has managed somehow to show up as guest rather than her username, she hasnt been banned or anything so how can she send a message to all members as a guest??

Assuming your forum is closed to guests posting & sending PMs, the only way I can think of, is if she sent the Pms & then deleted her own account, that would do it.

kalliopi is right, you can disable members from being allowed to delete their own accounts via
ACP >> USERS & GROUPS >> USER OPTIONS >> allow members to unsubscribe//no//save

Re: Member bulk messaging other members as a guest
Thank you, I checked that, and we already have it set so only admin can disable. Were totally thrown on this one. Could it have been a glitch maybe?
Re: Member bulk messaging other members as a guest
its always possible but very unlikely,
i suggest doing more tests on your forum then reporting what happens

Re: Member bulk messaging other members as a guest
Hi,
The only way a guest can send PM's is to Admin or mods (As per your settings) via the "Contact" form.
It's not possible to send to normal (Non moderator) members through this form.
The only way a person can send to all members, is by actually logging in, and selecting either a "members" group, or selecting all members them selves.
Then proceeding with removing their account.
I'd check the security logs in-case there is a glitch ( General > Forum / security logs)
There is no other way possible presently, nor will it be devolved as a privacy risk.

So in that case, is it possible she may have hacked or do you think just an error?
Shes constantly opening forums and closing them as she makes sooo many enemies, so she probably knows the ins and outs on them.

Re: Member bulk messaging other members as a guest
Sorry, I'm a bit confused now, how do you know who it is, and that she's constantly opening and closing something?
More to the fact; The PM's being sent to all members, I assume is a glitch from the coding, Could I just ask, when you go to: Admin panel >> general > e-mails and contact form > Who are set to the Recipients?
Do you mind if I do a test contact form, just to verify, before I pass this up as a glitch?

Re: Member bulk messaging other members as a guest
Hiya it is quite confusing, she was a member at the time of posting this.
She has a reputation online and makes a lot of enemies hence why she opens and closes forums every month.
Contact form is set to Admin only ... thats the first thing I checked.
Sure go ahead and try it out and I will see who recieves your message ..

Re: Member bulk messaging other members as a guest
So if she was a member at the time, it would make sense that all the PMs received are from a guest because her account has now been deleted. If this person does come back, ban her IP.
Re: Member bulk messaging other members as a guest
Hiya, everyone all got her message when she was still active .... we have banned her ip now, were just wondering how she managed this and if she could do it, can others ... Admin and Mods cant seem to see how, so maybe it was a error ... Thanks for all your help everyone. x
Re: Member bulk messaging other members as a guest
oooh, so it was a member, now I'm not so confused
When you go to PM another member, and instead of selecting a member, there's an option to PM a group. From my knowledge, she would of selected the 'members' group, and spammed everyone that way.
Then continuing to delete herself.
That itself is perfectly normal, you can forbid non-admins to send PM's to this group via: Admin panel >> Users & Groups > Group control > Select the O Next to the group, and change the setting "Permission to send PM Mailings " To Admins & Save.
