Server IP address for email

I bought my .com domain from 123.reg and I wanted to use an email from them with that domain, however they have said because my domain points from them to my forumotion board address (www and @) then email wont currently work.

They have said for email to work I would need to change the @ record to an A record and add the IP address of the hosting server ...... but I am pretty sure this is a no go as I don't host my forum?

Is that right, or can this work somehow?

Its not the end of the world as my co.uk is hosted and has its own email ... but just hoped this one could have its own too.
