I have been trying to get my site verified on Bing webmaster but it keeps saying that it cannot verify the site.
I have tired pasting the metatag code they provide into the homepage I created but it still does not recognise it. I am no doubt doing something wrong and I only have a sketchy understanding of HTML

I have downloaded the XML file they suggest but have no idea how I would upload that to my site

any help would be appreciated.

You need to use a meta tag. Go to Administration Panel => General => Forum promotion => Search engines => Additional tags => Other Meta Tags :
