    How can I make it that guest can view the topics in the forum but when they click to read the topic it asks them to log in?

    Administration Panel > General > Forum > Forums & Categories
    Advanced Mode
    Uncheck the read message boxes for guests.

    Never post your email in public.

    You have to press the premissions button for each forum.

    Advanced Mode:
    View the forum
    Read the topics
    Reply to a message
    Edit its own messages
    Delete its own messages and attachments
    Vote
    Open a topic
    Create a poll
    Create a sticky message
    Create an announce - global announcement
    Create an event (calendar)
    Create Attachment
    Download attachments
    Moderate

    I know but you said "uncheck read message box'. There is no read message box in the permissions.

    I want guests to view the topics but not the messages.

    Read the topics - guests will not be able to read the messages in the topics.

    View the forum means guest will see the forum titles. Topics are in a forum.

    Read the topics means - guest will see the messages in the topics.

    What I want is for the guest to view the topics but not the messages hope this is simple enough for you.
