Unless someone else comes here to this topic with a solution all I can do is speculate as to what I think might fix it. All I can do is tell you what I would try if no one had an answer, you can try it or wait for someone else to come along and suggest something, but I know you must be getting impatient as you started this topic Sunday. So what I would try and I know you are hesitant to do this because you would lose parts of your theme or all of it if it works because you wouldn't want to revert back to the old theme the way it is now, but I would go to AP>>Display>>Choose a theme>>Version>> and select the forums default phpbb3 theme and install that. Then I would wait 5 minutes and go to AP>>Configuration>> scroll all the way down and tick "Check to resynchronize" and save your settings, and forget about if it worked or not just leave the forum. Then I would close my browser and clear my computers cache and reboot my computer. Then wait another 15 or 30 minutes and go back to the forum and see if that issue is fixed. If it is then you can start rebuilding the forum again.
The point being, because you had different themes they somehow got intermixed and caused this situation and now you need to start from scratch with the default theme fully intact with no hint of other themes still present. I've heard of these themes getting intertwined before if you changed themes. The point of waiting is to let the forum fully load all the new theme components. The point of clearing your computers cache is so you will be viewing a new fresh page of your forum and not a cached page that would not be the real updated page.
