Is there a way to take my forumotion forum "offline" whilst I work on updating it so as to avoid members being able to log in whilst I'm doing the work

You can put forum on Maintenance
ACP > General > Forum > Configuration
Forum in construction : Yes
And you also can customize if you want on click at that button on end.
After that , just save all.
