    Solved Suspicious ip activity

Post by Emkate August 5th 2012, 10:56 pm

One of our members has been causing trouble using multiple member accounts, including an admin account. When I pull the ip address it shows this same user as using the same ip as the admin several different times. When we check all other members ip address no one else has ever had this happen. The admin swears it is not her posting from these other accounts. I guess what I'm asking is, is it possible to share an ip address with someone else who lives in a different state entirely or even on the other side of the country? I checked my own ip and several others and no one else ever shows up sharing an ip unless they share a residence. What are the chances???

We also keep getting emails from this person laughing at us and saying we have been hacked and that they have been reading and posting in our admin only thread using another's account without us knowing, we do know, but how can prove it? What are the chances of us being hacked?

There is much more to it but it's too much to include here. I honestly think we have an admin gone rogue but can't prove it, this person denies it and blames everyone else when it is 99% clear to us what's happening. I'm asking here because I don't know much about ip address usage and want to be sure.

Thanks! I hope I made sense! Lol this ip thing is so confusing to me at times....

The site can not be hacked, the accounts can be hacked but not the site it self.

Try getting an anti virus for all admins, and get an anti key-logger for admins as well. This way, they will never know your passwords, and they can no hack you.

And you have to be living inside the IP Radius (Range).

It is possible that your neighbor could be using the same IP, but not someone across the Country, little own across the state.

Thanks for the reply, this situation has become a huge pain in the neck. In fact it's happening right now as I type this. More taunting emails. The ip address is a dead give away as far as the posts and using the other admins account goes, but the admin swears she has nothing to do with it.

Thanks again, I will pass the info along to the founder and hopefully it will help.

Hi get the admin to change there Email address and password.
ban the members that are using that same ip address just there names and Email address not the ip address and see if they make a new account and one more thing.

Stop more then one member with the same ip address by following this step
    ACP >>
    General Tab >>

Suspicious ip activity Configuration Forum >> Security
IP address accounts creation limit, for each 24 hours : 1

    SAVE

This will stop the members making more then one account in the next 24hrs.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Thanks ape, I did what was recommended. However when I checked on it it reverted back "0" somehow. I set it again to 1 in 24 hrs...hopefully it stays this time. new memberships seemed to slow down overnight, though!

I think It's as resolved as much as it can be. We still have issues on our site but I don't think there is much more to do aside from the advice given here and having an enormous amount of patience. Hopefully this person causing trouble will just get bored and go away lol

    Thanks everyone for your help!

    You know that how? Razz
Plus a forum it self can't be hacked. The database can be hacked but the forum it self no. An account can be hacked. But not the forum it self
