    Solved Changing Skin

Post by ShowStopper November 24th 2012, 3:21 am

This is not so much a problem as a question, if I made a forum with phpBB2, and customized the theme, and then I changed it to phpBB3, would that change my settings or the appearance of it at all?

Also, if this isn't the right category to put this in, please move it into the right one.

Your CSS will be erase and replaced with the new version's CSS. Some CSS selectors are different between phpBB 2 and 3.

Did you mean just changing the version via the admin panel? Or reinstalling a new skin with a different version?

If you change only the version in the admin panel, it would kinda look bugged in my opinion.

Adding to what Sanket said, there are codes only compatible for a version, so do check which is which compatible with your new one.

Also, to save your CSS, you can manually save them in your ms word or in your notepad Smile.

What would be the best way to change the version and not change the appearance noticeably?

Alright. Would that be just what's in the CSS Stylesheet? Or would there be more to save in another location?

The best way is to install a skin from hitskin.com for that specific version itself.

Well, changing forum versions won't technically affect a lot, but save both your css and your homepage message to make sure Smile. Javascript would always be saved in your forum anyway unless you or another admin deletes it.

So installing the skin would change the version?

There's no such thing as conversion of skins since each skin has a specific version in which it'll function with fully Smile.

Best way you can do is create a skin of your own that would almost look like it by coding it differently or finding a skin near to its design Smile.

So then if I make a skin for phpBB3 that looks just like the one I'm using now, then if I switched versions and applied the new skin I made, it would look the same?

Well, technically, as long as you've got the link or anything to reinstall the same skin, the skin would change to the default style once version's changed. Apart from that, it might or might not look the same depending on the glitch you'll receive, or from the coding installed Smile

Though, I've tried what you're saying and reinstallation through a different version worked well with me Smile

Now, if I changed it to phpBB3 and didn't like the look, could I change it back to phpBB2 and reupload the phpBB2 skin and it look the way it did before the change?

Well, you can just go to ACP < Display < Themes Management < Restore the skin you used if it's still there

But yeah, you can revert it back to the old one Smile.
