How do I get rid of this showing in the portal, it is viewable to everyone members or not and I don't know how it got there:

Just open that thread & delete that post. Its a initial post on the forum automatically generated when you create the forum.

Also when you first create a portal page, there are some widgets already added. You can remove the one (I believe that is News widget.) that showing that.

Thank you for the replies but I have not got a clue about portals pages or how to delete that have had a look at the admin and can't see it anywhere most grateful for a step by step instruction, thanks

The contents won't be there directly in the admin panel. It must be a widget called news in the center.

OK thank you I had a look and have had to remove that widget totally which I didn't really want to do but the text was embedded and I couldn't find anything to remove the text and leave the widget.

All that you needed to do was just delete that thread from the forum. Then it would have been removed from the portal widget too.

There was not a thread? I looked at every single thing there was no category, no forum and no topic with that info in there,

Please activate that widget as well.

When you create your forum, there is a thread created called My First Topic. That is what you are seeing in the widget. You can move that topic to a different forum or change the News widget to show topics from a different forum. This is not in your administration panel, it is on the forum itself.
