Can anyone tell me if my site automaticaly blocks spammers or is that something I have to set up ot activate please?

Forumotion does take every step with many anti spam features already automatically enabled and built in when your forum is created.

However, you'll find that some spammers will get through in which the best thing to do is block their IP in your administration panel.
