    Create a new profile field as mentioned in the tutorial.
    Necessarily filled ? Yes
    Save.

    To add to what Sanket said it is necessary for the Necessarily filled ? box to be ticked yes because otherwise it won't show up when a new user is registering. Without it ticked its just an optional field in the members profiles.
