    I'm new to this type of forum and am trying desperately not to be an illiterate pain in the rear.

    Can members elect to receive an email notification when a new message is posted?

    Yes,

    Its in their profile under the preferences tab. Its the option called "Always notify me of replies :"

    If yes, it will send an email to the member when a reply is given in a thread that they have replied too or are watching.
