Solved Domain name transfers and hosting

Post by meemo Mon 21 Jul - 19:39

Can someone please clarify the domain and hosting policies?

    1. I already own my domain name.  How much would it cost to have forumotion host the domain name?

    2. How much does forumotion charge me to register domain name with them, and am I able to transfer to another registrar when it expires?  When it expires will my forum be available to guests and members?

    3. How much disk space does hosting with forumotion give me?

    4. Does hosting with forumotion give me more flexibility in controlling upload images, i.e. deleting them?

    1. You can't get Forumotion to host the domain name e.g. them host it for you. However you can pair your domain name with Forumotion and that's free
    2. Again since FM doesn't host the domain name it would be free. However if you bought a domain name through FM via the ACP then you can't transfer it until it expires and then you'd have to re-buy on a host like Godaddy
    3. You get unlimited disk space. However you do have limited gallery storage e.g. you get 1GB of gallery storage free. This is where you can choose to host images saved in your ACP
    4. You can upload and delete images freely.

So to have forumotion not show up in the url, that would require me to transfer the domain name to you. Then I would pay the monthly credits fee to remove the ads from the site. Is that correct?

Domain name and ads removal is two separate things.

Well you wouldn't have it transferred to us exactly. Like if you bought a domain name off of Godaddy and paired it with an FM forum. Godaddy would still be the host of the domain name so to speak. You'd still pay Godaddy to renew the domain name etc.

The only time FM hosts the domain name is when you buy it through the admin control panel.

And yes, you can choose to remove ads via credits.

When you say pair, so I can keep the domain name where it is, and still have the url's load without the subdomain forumotion in the address.  Not just have the domain transfer when someone enters the main domain name.  Makes sense?

You can redirect a domain name you purchase somewhere else to your Forumotion forum.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you entirely properly.

In my mind when someone says transfer a domain name. It means going from one host to another host e.g. leaving Godaddy and going to FM or leaving FM and going to Godaddy. So we could be thinking of two different things.

So you'd keep the domain name on whatever host you have it on and you'd pair it with the FM forum and the domain will appear instead of the FM subdomain name. However your forum of course will still be available via the subdomain name.

This is the only tutorial we have about it: https://help.forumotion.com/t7021-redirect-an-extern-domain-name-that-you-own-to-your-board

Thank you for the clarification.  Since the domain name panel I have doesn't look like your example I'm going to have to simplify this the best way I know. I can achieve the following with keeping my domain name at godaddy once those settings are in place my urls will look like this:
    myforum.com/forum/f1-general-discussion

    Not this:
    myforum.forumotion.ca/forum/f1-general-discussion

Remind me how many credits to achieve this result.  And I don't see the domain option in my admin panel, is it only available to the founder?

Only the founder can see the credits management section (Misc. Tab).

You might want to contact your domain host to ask how to pair with FM forums or to ask questions based on the tutorial we provided.

Thank you so much for your time and patience.  Until I can get the founder is there a way to know how many credits it will take to put the domain name in on FM admin side?

Sorry edited to ask: Will the forumotion taskbar always be there?

The toolbar? No you can remove it. Via ACP --> Modules --> Toolbar

It doesn't cost credits to add a domain name you own to Forumotion.
