Administration Panel => General => Forum => Categories and Forums => Press the 
button to any (maybe all) forums and press "Advanced Options" and check if "Edit its own messages" is unticked.

What do you mean they didn't work. Was "Edit its own messages" already ticked on? And was there already an image for the EDIT button?

Make sure nothing is set for:
1. Administration Panel (advanced mode)
2. General Tab
3. Configuration (on the left, under Messages and e-mails)
4. Post edit duration limit for a member
