thanks button is not showing

I have clicked to activate the thanks button and the reputation and also checked that the button is in the display section under buttons which it is but I can't seem to get the thanks button to show? what am I doing wrong? can someone please help, I have already read the tutorial and followed the instructions but still get nothing.

The thanks button will only appear for you when you make a topic and someone else replies to it. You cannot see it all the time and you will not see it on other peoples threads. It will only appear for you on threads that you create and have gotten replies on from other people other then yourself.

Unfortunately not, as previously mentioned the thanks button is only for the Author of a topic. We posted a tutorial last week to add a "thanks" button to the author's post.

This is correct, you are not able to thank an author for their topic. Only the topic starter can use the thank feature, however, you can always use the reputation "like" system to do a "Thanks" system. A useful tutorial for this is in the link below. Try using that and see what you think.
