I know that JavaScripts work with the announcements, so you can try using the RSS feed and see if it works.

Hi thanks for reply - as someone who is a complete novice to all this and programs full stop - could you suggest how I could do this - for example would I get the BBC RSS URL and paste it somewhere?

Well yes, you should get the code source and head over to the Administration Panel => General => Messages & e-mails => Announcements
Make sure your Announcements are activated. Then, press the
button and paste the code source in the "Content" box.
