Description of problem

I did not see anywhere if this issue is still ongoing. The Chatbox on my forum still has problems auto refreshing for myself and others. Please check or advise on what can be done.

Still having this issue. With heavier traffic starting on the forum right now due to new game release this issue is becoming quite a bit more inconvient. Is there any update information this?

try disabling the chat box then turning it back on

Nope.. didn't work for the refresh issue but the "archives" work better now.

Anyways.. disableing it and turning it back on did not work.

is this just you having the issue?

My self and one or two others have reported the issue as well. The others were a mod and a regular forum member.

try clearing your browser history and cache ..if that don't work make sure your browser is up to date.

if neither of those work could you find out if the other two members are also running internet explorer

Sure thing. I'll also try it on a couple of different computers and browsers.

It could be caused by CSS codes, JavaScript, or modified templates.

I think it may be the Javascript or as you say SLGray. Not sure hoe to fix that though if it is the case.

Is it occurring with the chatbox on the index, on the full chatbox page, or both ?

Also, do you have any scripts installed which modify the chatbox ?
( Admin Panel > Modules > JavaScripts codes management )

There is an error in one of the codes added in this placement, by showing the console browser, seems a CSS ...

@Ange: it's on both and I do not have any Javascrips on as far as I can tell.

@JScript, I either don't see anything or don't know exactly what to look for.

We've been having this issue on our forum as well. The chat simply doesn't refresh, it only refreshes when one of us posts something new (for which we are logged out immediately and have to log back on)

The only javascript we have is some that I just added today, the ones suggested here like sound notification and removing the "blah has joined/logged out", such things like that. We are using Invision, absolutely everything is pretty much vanilla (except like I mentioned, I JUST added that Javascript today)

It's very frustrating for us. I believe we both use firefox (though this problem occurs on Chrome as well) I have cleared my cache, she has cleared hers. I disabled and reenabled the chatbox. Nothing seems to have worked. This happens on both the normal forum, and the actual chatbox page. (which I'll also mention that the javascript/jquery doesn't work on the actual chatbox page)

I may be wrong but for me the only way to have a JS file named as mentioned into your FB console is by adding it from your AP.

I must also admit that it's very strange to have CSS declarations in a JS file :S

I've just visited your forum and I don't have any error message in FB and I don't see any script in your AP, is it linked ? Have you deleted some scripts ? Do you always see the console error ?

I tested it out this morning and it seems nothing has changed. The chat still doesn't update unless someone posts a new post. It will appear like you and everyone else is still logged on when in reality, they timed out.

I'm not sure to understand @kirabook:

there's no update as long as there's no new message → that's normal.

But the system detects you're disconnected when there's an event; without event there's no control otherwise there should be a permanent task controlling if the session token is still active and delete it + publish message when one or more session token have become invalid ... And this would be really too expensive regarding to system resources which are more useful for chatbox than for background tasks

Before the chatbox update, the chatbox updated every 5 to 15 minutes right? It would refresh and show the person as away after 5 minutes, and after 15 minutes it would refresh and the person would not appear on the list at all because they have been timed out.

Now, it does neither of those things. 5 minutes may go by and it appears that everyone is still online. 15 minutes or more go by and it appears that everyone is logged in, including yourself, but as soon as you enter something in the chat, it finally refreshes itself and you get logged out.

I just want it to work like it did previously, checking to see who is online and who isn't every 5 minutes or so. The "away" feature is pointless as it is, and it's bothersome to type something in and get logged out because you realize that the chat wasn't refreshing and you weren't actually logged in.

@kirabook: the old chatbox was based on "short polling" technology and the new one uses "long polling". In the old mode a request was sent every 5 seconds and now we're waiting for an event so that's completely different but be sure that we gonna discuss about your problem.

Usually, we would be on the chat all the time, but now our activity has decreased so much because it's frustrating when you check and you think the other person isn't there yet, or they think you aren't there, only to find out you missed them by an hour because the chatbox didn't refresh.

The temporary solution that I have worked out is to install an addon to firefox that will refresh the page every 5 minutes, but I've already run into a downside where I'll have typed out something long and lose everything when the page suddenly refreshes. So I am hoping that somehow, the chatbox will refresh itself like it did before the update, or something similar.

Thanks to @Chapo for taking the time to explain how the chatbox is working  
The auto-refresh works like that now. If there is no action on the chatbox, nothing happens!

Maybe the current sytem is not perfect, but we won't spend time to modify this point as it can cause extra problems.

I've tried with Firefox and Chrome and I can't see the error message in Console, please gimme the process !

Here's what I do:

• Open a new browser and a new debug console (firebug with Firefox and developer tools with Chrome)
  
• Copy/past the URL of your forum into addressbar
  
• Log in forum
  
• Check Console
  

Do you do something else (I've also tried logging in Chatbox and there's no difference) ?
