    In progress Guest names

Post by Your Mom May 16th 2015, 12:05 am

I have two questions. The first is the same as this from a closed/solved thread.

Guest names Sujet11 by FIB on September 18th 2014, 8:22 am
Having an odd problem with a new forum, I am trying to create a test member and no matter what name I register in I get the same message as show below which is that the name has already been taken but I don't have any members with these names, I only created the forum today

I have already tried both the offered solutions, but the problem still persists. Any other suggestions?

    My second question,

is it possible to include a generic user name for all guests?
I've searched, but have been unable to find a way to do this.

    TIA

    Your Mom

One other point. I made a mistake when entering my software version; it's 3 not 2

@your mom hey just go to AP > Users & Groups > users options

and where it says "Send notify e-mail on new user registrations :" click None

I don't think that this is possible unless you provide on your forum a free account for guests to use since they don't have one, but that could cause people to use the same account which is prohibited on forumotion

    Thanks for your quick response.

One issue I have with your solution is that I've set member activation as an option to cut down on my workload. If I follow your suggestion, I believe that would no longer be an option as they have to activate via a link sent by email. Is that correct?

If you let guests post on your forum, their posts will say guest.

@your mom If you click none, then neither you nor the registrant will have to activate their account. There is a bug in the Forumotion registration system where when a user registers for an account and the email notification is not set to "none" and the accounts activation is not set to "no activation (this is all in Users options), then if the user can't access the email with which they registered, the account name is also reserved forever.

Absolutely, I understand, but I was hoping that they didn't have to type in a user name. Some people simply want to post anonymously for whatever reason and having the issue with many names "already being taken" causes further hassle.

I really do not know if we can change that.

I fear this would then open the floodgates to the spam bots.

    Try this:

    AP > General > Forum > Security
Look for the one that deals with usernames.

Yeh, tell me why I knew you were gonna say that lol

Admin panel > general > security

at the bottom of "security administration" it should allow you to limit the number of accounts created by any single IP address. there @your mom

Cheers to you @your mom make sure that it is set to '1'.

maybe someone could tell you how to physically code a sort of firewall that stops people from the same IP address from creating over 1 account (not just 24 hours, but forever)

@SLGray Perhaps I'm blind, but following that path, I see nothing dealing with user names beyond that already discussed.

I was referring to the issue with username in use.  There is an option for questionable usernames.

Unauthorize subscriptions made with the most commonly used spam usernames.:

@slgray i think you mean the section in the admin panel > general > censoring

and censoring usernames? or are you talking about the usernames used to advertise?

nvm lol you meant the latter

Still, it seems that at the end of the day, trying a user name that is not registered and has not been used I still get Sorry, but this username has already been taken.
Admittedly, with multi-word user names it is not a problem or is greatly reduced.

@Ace 1 LOL, I'm a complete coding noob; not my area at all.

@SLGray that has already been discussed (was one of the solutions in the OP)

Unauthorize subscriptions made with the most commonly used spam usernames. :is set to no

Wait, is your forum active? Like active to the point where you would have a lot of people registered?

Guess I'll just have to live with it. I have noticed it seems a little buggy.

    Thanks for trying anyway
