Toolbar Alternative???

Is there anyway do remove the toolbar but keep some functions, but in another layout/design.
So what I actually want is: 'Welcom <NAME> and Notifications.

Maybe something that shows your <NAME> and when you click on it, you will see the same but with Notifications info in it (if possible).

All ideas are welcome.
