Replacing the Chatbox?

I hope this is the right section for this, but I'm trying to change or replace the chatbox on my forum to something a little nicer since the default one disconnects people too often and feels a little slow.  I was hoping to maybe add an IRC chatbox in it's place.  The problem is that I have never tried to code anything.  Any sites that look like they have what I'm looking for don't explain how to install them very well or at all.  All I know is that it has something to do with the Javascript codes section on the Admin Panel.  Is there any way someone could give me a hand with this? 


Currently the version is phpbb, but can be changed to phpbb3 if that matters.

Well the XAT chat box worked, but I still can't seem to find anything on an IRC module for the forum.  Is that doable at all or something that can't be added?

They should offer a code to use on forums.
