Solved Need Help Changing Domain Name

Post by Malum Sat Jan 30, 2016 2:37 pm

Hey, so I'm the new founder of this forum: http://fandomtopia.forumotion.com/ and the old founder told me that the forum was ready to be fandomtopia.com

The old founder has been helping me trying to figure out to change it before the old domain name expires. If I don't change it, then I'll be stuck with the old domain name which I don't want.

I tried changing it everywhere I knew that I could, but I just get confused because I don't want to mess anything up.
I thought that I could change it when I'm in misc, but it only comes up with this:
Need Help Changing Domain Name 4a8rozo

I'm scared that since it says "renewal" that the old domain name would be back for another year.
I tried going to general<forum<forum address to do it, but there's nothing in there that says that I can change it. When I click on personalized domain name, it only says the domain name url and then force the url redirection which I believe would give me the old one.

I just want to change it to the new domain name, thanks.

    Try:
General > Forum Address > Personalized Domain name

There is a box where you can insert the URL you want.

I did that too, but I took a screenshot of the renewal thing and I think that refers to the old domain name.

    Does this help?

    Buttercup wrote:Hello

You have many options. Via the administrative panel you can:
    - Renew the current domain name for free (the forum has a very good activity so the renewal is free)
    - Change the domain name! However, if you delete the current domain name and return to the original url of the forum:http://bachandbachettefans.forumotion.com
    - Then you can buy a new domain name for 1600 credits

Please note that removing a domain name is not good for your traffic! Before deleting the domain name I really advise you to inform all your members with a global announcement and a newsletter. Otherwise, they won't be able to enter your forum...

So what I can do is delete the old domain name and then buy a new one? Or just buy a new one.

I believe you need to delete the old one then buy a new domain.

This is starting to get quite complex. Is it possible to just buy a new custom domain or I have to get rid of the old one first?

You can not have two domain names redirect to one forum. You will have to delete the old one or let it expire then purchase a new one.

Yeah I might just wait until it expires to buy a new one. But when it expires, would it just go back to the normal forumotion link or the old domain name?

I believe so? The url is just fandomtopia without the .com part so it has forumotion in the url.

    Hello Lashton,

First of all, you need to know there is a high risk when deleting your domain name. You'll risk of losing all your traffic and SEO, what is a shame because your forum seems to have a good activity.
If you really want to delete your domain name, I highly advise to inform your members before the deletion (Via a global announcement or a newsletter).

For security reason, we ask to provide the following information:

    Custom Domain:
    Original Domain:
    Name (First & Last):
    Address:
    Zip:
    Phone Number
Email (Used to create register domain):

Feel free to send me a private message with all those information.

    Thanks

But I think I'm just going to wait for it to expire as I don't want to lose anything that's important to the forum.

    Hello

Please note that if you wait for the domain name expiration, the domain name won't be available until it becomes totally public.

    Best regards

She means for sae publicly, after a domain has expired there is a park time to allow one to renew their domain, after the park period is up, then it becomes for sale publicly once more, this means anyone who is anyone can purchase it Wink.

Hello let me see if i can Clear this up for you.

the domain name you have right now is still in use Wink

when this domain runs out it then gets out on the list for resale to you for 30 days.

After 30days are up it then gets put up for sale all over the world to anyone.

Now if you want to keep the domain name you just pay again.

If you want a new domain after it runs out you can then buy a new one on your ACP.

I would advice you to make sure you post on your forum your old FM domain so members can Bookmark you as that address ... don't worry the FM domain will send you back to the Domain you have now until it runs out Then when it runs out it will go back to your FM address until you get your new domain again.

I hope that clears this up for you.

Thank you! That clears everything up.
I'll probably let people know about the changed domain when the old one expires so people can still access the forum.
