    Solved permissions

Post by apslatton Sun 1 May - 1:28

is there a way to set a different level of permissions by rank? ie: my site has webmaster, admin, super mods, and mods. for mods I would want them to only moderate forum posts. for super mods, they would be allowed to ban users etc. admin has full access minus actual changes to website. is this possible using forumotion? I know I'm used to vbulletin, but ive noticed many things different. cant set custom permissions, cant add usergroup banners etc.

I do not think there is a way to do that. I could be wrong.

Best option to do in my opinion would be to make ranks that are also titled the usergroups and give those ranks to the people in the usergroups. Like ey go together. Someone in the Moderator group would have a rank titled Moderator. That way you could assign them by permissions since they are also in a usergroup. If you don't want the usergroup to show you can mark it as hidden or if you want the group to just not be shown on the legend you can choose to not mark "color group" and the group can be seen on the Usergroups link but not on Legend.

    Hello,

Yes you can do this, you would just need to create a group for each of these (can be done in ACP (admin panel)-->Users and groups-->Groups and hit the green button at the top or bottom to create a new group), once these groups are made and the users you want in them added, you can go into each of your forum's sections and sections permissions and tick 'Moderate' or whatever you want them to be able to do and hit save.

User wants the ranks to have permissions which I believe is not possible. So yes this what ai was saying, make a usergroup that can be technically tied to the rank.

yea like I don't want a mod to be able to ban ppl or have full access like webmaster. they would only be able to moderate the posts in the forums. I thought about the usergroups thing, they are set up but that's still not really what I'm looking for. that just lets certain ranks to write/read etc

Usergroups is the only way to set up permissions using forums, ranks dont have permissions and cant have any, as it is just a rank given to a user and has no power or real significants.

Usergroups can be set to be able to moderate sections of the forum, ranks can not. I dont know what you mean by they only allow people to read and write, if you tick 'Moderate' for a certain group in a forum's permissions, then that usergroup and all users in it will be moderators of that section.

If you set it to allow any moderative group (Super Moderators, etc) then ALL moderative groups will be able ban users. If you dont set it to all any moderative group to be able to ban users, then only administrators will be able to ban users. Smile

You can make moderators not be able to ban and you can set different permissions for usergroups. You are looking for usergroups, you just unfamiliar.

Basically there is one usergroup with the crown you are given when you start your forum. Anyone added their has access to the admin panel thing. If you make a new usergroup then you can set the permissions of that usergroup to how you want. Also if you modify a sub-forum, in the permissions part of editing that sub-form, you can choose who reads, writes, etc. all in advance mode of that part while viewing in advanced mode of the admin panel.

I know exactly what you're saying with the usergroups thing. but that's not what I want. maybe I'm just being confusing. ok regular stock website has 2 ranks, admin and mod. admins can do everything ie: webmaster. mod I'm not even sure what all they cant do but ok. I added 2 ranks to this. in my old gaming community a mod basically moderated their clans' forums, nothing else. a super mod could moderate all forums viewable to them, but also ban members. an admin can pretty much do everything a webmaster can do. the exceptions would be like an admin cant physically change the forum theme etc but unlike a super mod, they can view any usergroup and make changes to it, such as this:
a general passed the generals intro class. they would then need to be added to that (hidden) group, which would then give them a special banner like Certified General. an admin could also do name change requests reset pw for users create new forums and usergroups. whereas the only other rank that can do that in my case would be webmaster. see what I mean now?

Yes I see. Unfortunately admins cando almost everything the founder can except templates, credit management, etc. though I don't think that would be an issue if you trusted your admins and made it clear what their job would be.

haha I completely agree but when building a gaming community you cant just trust anyone like that. you don't know most of these people from adam. ok so i guess this topic is solved then. thank you!

    Ranks are only for looks.

Groups are the ones with permissions/privileges.

The only way to set permissions for ranks is to have groups with the rank title.
