how can i use my own pictures or just a plain background, i'd rather not use hitskin,
and how can i upgrade the smiley's?

Two ways:

1. AP > Display > Colors & Pictures > Pics Management
Advanced Mod
First Tab
Look for background _____ (page).
Replace the image's URL with yourself. If you do not want an image, remove the image's URL and press the save button.

2. AP > Display > Colors & Pictures > Colors
CSS Stylesheet tab
This is only if the background image was added in the CSS stylesheet.
