Does anyone know the dimensions of the background skin, as this does not show in the admin panel

hello 

if you mean the homepage background body forum image then it depends 
-if you want the image to repeated or to be fixed
-if you add the background image using CSS or if you add it through the admin panel
-if you want to add the image to fulfill the whole forum then you want a large one but it might look weird/stretched or hidden by the categories 

the best way is to add a medium size image style it using css so the image won't repeat or auto scale depending on screen size

if you dont know how to view image dimensions just right click on the image and click "open image in a new tab"
the image will open in a new tab and you will see the dimensions on the tab's title

Not sure I have read the admin correctly panel looks like its 200x113

the image TonnyKAmper is referring to is a blue blank image 
if the image you want to use has any kind of motive or pattern, this motive will repeat unless you add a code

This can be binned I am not going to change the background skin for a new one
