    Solved Guest problem ???

Post by jonrms Wed Jan 04, 2023 9:22 am

Firstly Happy New Year everyone. I hope you all had a great time.

    My details are ModernBB
    https://preciousmetalforum.forumotion.com/t1124-first-member-of-2023

Note that link to my forum also is a link to the problem.

I have a member who deleted himself so I suspect. But a account must remain. I can not find a Guest account. I can not find the original account. I have all services for Guest posting turned off.

Can anyone help here explain or help me find a way to remove the account or for him/her to reactive it. And to stop this loophole to post as a Guest member.

    Thank you

I have resolved this and found the loop hole. If a member closes their account it will no longer show. However they can still post oddly? I will need to look at this in a security issue.
I was able to look up his previous posts to determine who he was and is. So i do know who it was. I banned his email address but I am not sure if this has solved the problem or not.

Time will tell. Please feel free to close this unless you have information which can help. Thank you.

    hello

Happy New Year to you and your family also

To stop guests from posting you must change each forum's permissions
you can read this to help you https://help.forumotion.com/t138466-permissions?highlight=permissions

if the member unsubscribed from your forum then the account is deleted
after you unsubscribe, the profile will appear as a guest without any information and the content posted in posts, will remain as it is.

I hope you had a great Christmas and New Year Skoulki.

I have followed all the permissions, But there is a problem with members being able to delete their accounts ( So I can not see them! ) and then post. I am not sure what to do. Please feel free to sign up... and test this out. But my permissions do not allow guests to post. I am concerned now over this new discovery. And yes I tried it out with the same results.

Edit, The problem is when a user deletes their account it shows as a Guest.
Is there a way to stop this? And to retain just the user name so that it continues with the flow... But leaving the account deleted.

Please so not send also pm about the same issue
    Thank you

There is an option in the admin panel / users and groups/ user options that you can disable the possibility to delete their account
But a user can still unsubscribe if he/she wants you can not prevent this

The admin can make an account inactive from admin panel instead of deleting an account to maintain the username but this is an admin's option only

I apologise. I sent that thinking it would help, and as I was still investigating I noticed where the problem was. I will go to the ACP and turn off that setting. Thank you.

Ok, so I can click on that option to not allow them to unsubscribe. But if requested to I know I am required to.

Will this just give me control to delete the user but keeping the content?

    Listen
A member itself has two options
Delete the account ( if that option is available from admin panel )
Or unsubscribe from our unsubscribe tool ( this is can not be prevented)

You as admin has many options from the admin panel
    Delete a member
Banned a member ( for x days or totally)
    Make a member not active

Ok I have listened and took on board everything you have said.

I do not have a option to stop them deleting the account which is disruptive on the forum.

I know I can not stop them from unsubscribing. But with missing posts, and messages or just the GUEST title it is confusing.

Here is MY ACP. I have had 2 users since I formed this delete profiles. And it causes a huge headache.

    Hello @jonrms,

Forumotion gives the right to any user to delete his own account and posts (data) through forumotion site. Regardless of this option that gives quick access to the member's preferences to delete the account. That's probably what happened you can see from the logs in ACP.

    Thank you @pedxz

I think you answered most of my question then. Now I know the user can delete the account and data, that leaves a vacant hole in the forum. And it interupts conversations and stats. I would assume there is no way of stopping this. I have no problem with deleting the users account and closing it. But to keep the data is useful and helpful for others.

But if Forumotion do not allow it I might have to look at alternatives.

    Dang.

I know this topic is now closed but by LAW you have the right to close/ delete / unsubscribe
By Law the data saved on each and every post made on your forum is data of your members and you have no right to save that data if they want to remove it or want it removed so no matter what forum system you use you by law have to let them do as they wish with the account and it's posts.

    Sorry but it's law.
