Being able to password protect a forum

I remember a few years ago when invisionfree (I believe aceboard had it too) had forums you could make, you could password protect one of the forums "rooms". This feature was really neat when hosting ORGs. You can hide special powers and the players have to find the password somehow to get into the room. If hosting RPGs you can hide monsters, treasure, etc.

This is too easy to bypass by members.

I guess it depends. I don't recall how one would have bypassed it before.

Someone who has access gives the password to someone without access.

I get what you're saying. In the context of the games/ORGs I host, I don't think that would be an issue because once inside the prize is claimed etc. So I guess it depends what you need it for. I remember when using the invisionfree and aceboard it was a nifty little tool to have.

I am a member of a couple forums that have this feature.  One tried it but quickly removed it when everyone was sharing the password.

The easiest way is to create the forums and add your users manually to that forum, removing the permissions to see those forums from the rest of the users, you can do everything with the permissions of the foor and its edition

May I ask what forums have this feature? I'm a big fan of using forumotion, but at the same time, that feature would be really useful for what I need. I understand not everyone sees the value in it, but for me the password is not long term, it's not meant to keep people out and a select few in. It's to hide powers, gifts etc and have players compete to solve it. Once someone solved it and claimed the prize, they can go ahead and share the password all they want, the prize is already claimed. I'm not sure if maybe I am just not explaining myself right, but I really do feel like the feature is good depending what you need it for.

I have been using forumotion to host for over a decade now. My qualm is not that I am uncertain how to keep people out of forums. It's wanting to hide things on the forum but give people a password access to the specific forum so when they solve the clues and get the right password, they can go inside and claim the prize without me the admin having to be there to let them in.
