Design or Forum Widgets? Empty Design or Forum Widgets?

Post by Jalokim December 14th 2008, 9:06 pm

Hey... I've been a little less active ... but obviously I did not leave FM (I can't leave forumotion ... I kinda signed a contract with caihlem ... if I leave I also sell my soul ... hmm so I can't really leave).

Anyway... I was gone cos, I've seriously examining the CSS of the IPB board. I must say I am amazed.
I have created 2 demo sites... I'll show them to you.
tell me what you think about the style (oh and the themes are not complete... so there will be a few bugs)
Just examine the general look and feel, and check out the possibilities.
    site 1:
    http:/

    site2:
    http://

The styles are quite nice ... BUT
Oh yes ... there we have it... the * ... the tiny letters at the bottom of a document.
True to have this kind of look, you cannot use the forum widgets. Unfortunately to get the skins looking so good, I had to sacrifice the forum widgets.

Now I don't know if if I should carry on making themes like these for you guys, for free , for hitskin, or if the forumotion forum widgets are a god send that can't be removed?

So tell me what you guys think?
widgets? and SVG themes that can resize themselves giving the forum widgets....
    or
Really nice looking , nicely customized themes with no widgets option?
    thanks for any input

(note the dark theme , the second link , is already reserved)
(oh and don't register on the test sites, I don't run those sites... I use them to build themes ... )

    I don't use widgets so I don't think it's really necessary.
Those themes look good, but I really can't stand IPB look. Just my tastes...

I like the site 1 a lot, looks quite professional.
I could probably sacrifice the widgets for such a professional looking forum.

Edit: One more query, does this also remove our choice of making html pages? Or it does not have any bad effect on it.

you mean html pages that use the forums default header and footer??

well ... as long as the material (content) inside the html doesn't run to wide there shouldn't be any problems at all. But the content size is also quite large, so I don't think there will be problems. Razz

They look pretty good, really professional. But I can't see where you sacrificed the widgets for that?

Maybe you should tell us what directly you did there so we could think about that.

But all in all you should add them and just tell people it would held them back to make widgets. I'm not using widgets so much. If you have a forum where you don't need it you can use those themes.

Nice work J. Personally I wouldnt sacrifice the widgets though. Especially all the code work I did to make the "original Widgets" to use on forumotion.

    Replying to Mr.Killerguitar
Its basically the way the background is done. You can add widgets but you will loose the dropshadow backgrounds and a load more... I haven't seen the full extent of what the forum widgets have on the design.

The forums work perfectly ... but problems may arouse with forum widgets.
But ... for people that have to have their widgets .. there could be a way to add 1 widget without damaging the rest. but that would have to be custom made. I am still exploring the IPB CSS, maybe I'll be able to implement the dropshadow trick I used in phpbb3, which autoresized whenever it needed to.

answering cherries question... its not a matter of screen size... rather resolution. I also have a 17" and yet my resolution is at 1200x800.
The themes are meant to be 800x600 users friendly, but there could be problems (not in all themes). The themes should work well on 1024 reso's, they'll work perfect on 1200 ... and there won't be much difference on 1600 and above.

I really don't know what to do next... But I'll keep trying to get that stubborn forumotion CSS working. maybe I'll get something soon. But all in all , you guys would take these themes if they were on hitskin?

Jalokim, would you mind putting the 2nd skin that you have on Hitskin please?

And also, I think you should make more kinds of the skins that look like the 2nd one. Or different, they are amazing, and definitely worth sacrificing widgets over. Smile

Edit: What do you mean the second one is reserved.. as in it's only for yourself or one person?

Well, I can only repeat it, add it to the hitskin database.

It's looking pretty cool and not everyone uses widgets. Good work at all, thanks for sharing your idea

Very Happy I like your new themes Jalokim, Very nice. Good Work hun. Design or Forum Widgets? Wng I personally would choose a professional theme like yours without widgets, I just don't really like the way widgets look honestly, adds to much noise or confusion to such a pretty theme sometimes in my opinion. I could live without widgets on my forum , 4 sure Wink

I'd definitely give up widgets for a theme. Widgets are just little accessories - like handbags for women. Wink

    hmm,
i'm also discover this great tweak not long ago, then quickly i realize that im must give up widget to use this skin. As addition, if your use sleek forum bar, maybe you have to give up portal too because its simply mess up with portal bar.

BTW, i did find a way to fix portal block but still don't have idea how to solve widget. i think we have to sacrifice widget before we can use this great skin Smile

Snorki ... lol ... take break. The above themes are not finished ... and I won't be posting more junk onto hitskin.

I said I'll be posting a couple themes like that to hitskin. when ... I do not know.
The second theme is reserved because I promised MEX I'd give it to him and his photoshop forum.
@ cherry ... its not meant to look like that... and frankly I don't know why its not being displayed correctly on your screen. I'll recheck the CSS, maybe I made a bit of an alignment mistake... or your resolution is too small to handle it.

But I have better news... After sitting in solitude ... thinking in the most inappropriate place ...(the church) ... i figured out a way to have widgets and a nice display... thats one sermon that I don't remember cos I CSS code was flashing infront of me.
I'll begin tests as soon as possible. I'll bring high tech and professional themes to hitskin to get members involved in IPB and to really show of my skills as a designer. I have been limited by the phpbb's.

so stay tuned... thanks for the feedback ... i really like the new themes, and I really want you guys to start wearing them... i am sometimes disgusted by really popular and expanding forums with butt-ugly themes.

thats all you had to say ... lols ...
But I think I want FTP access to forumotion files... thats what I really want...

    anyway...
I have an update... I am currently developing more compatible theme styles for forumotion. Although still in development I can say that you don't have to worry about your widgets in the future...

I think there is a way to get around this... there is a load of unexplored territory on the IPB platform... things that can't be seen on the css... so yeah... keep your hopes up... the new generation of IPB themes is close... it can be done at least...

Hey guys Its me again ...

and I bring good news ....
After a long week of coding (trial and error) I have finally developed a beautifully working code for the IPB css. The new coding gives nice drop shadow sides and a lot of the cool additions from my beta testing versions.

The best part is that the CSS now has no problem with IE users and whats better...there is no fixed widths, which means everybody will be able to use and see the forums exactly the same no matter the resolution of your monitor. yay Razz

I have already put to practice these installments, if you want a preview... well i think you guys know where to find my test sites.
Thanks for waiting and supporting me, and as promised I found a way to satisfy everybody ...(i hope)

oh and there is no conflict with the forum widgets...
the last test will be hitskin and its preview system... maybe the new hitskin update will be beneficial.

    cordially
    An exhausted coder Jalokim
