phpBB3 topic icons are placed over the original icons...
I think it is in phpBB2 that they are placed to the side...
you could try editing the icon and add a transparent space to the left of the image... then when it is placed over, it will look like it is to the side...

Actually, you can use phpBB 2 cause it worked for me.
