Forumotion has been great, but I feel that I want to start really learning how websites work. So, therefore, I might possibly run another forum (phpBB) using a web host. But I need to know something: will I be able to strip my domain name from my current Forumotion website and put it on the new? I'm not really sure how to, as the control panel gives no documentation.

Again, I don't have anything against Forumotion, but I think the best way to further my education in web design is to actually run one myself, without the help of the user-friendly interface.

One more question: Once I transfer the domain, how will I manage it when the time comes to pay the yearly fee? And will the fee still be the same, or the price offered by the new host?

EDIT: Also, will I be able to keep and manage my email addresses that I got when I first bought the domain?

You could have the host do it for you or you can buy it on a site like godaddy or namecheap. I'm not sure about being able to keep the emails

The year you have now on the domain will remain the same. You will pay whatever the new host price has. The emails will be gone once the domain transfer as its no longer with us.

Darn--well, I guess we'll have to go without emails for a while. I just hope the new host will provide them.

I'm thinking of http://byethost.com/ They have a free hosting package that looks intriguing. Basically, I need something that's free, good, and ad-free.

When I get a server, can I upload all my files first, or is it a good idea to configure the domain first?

In order to get something set up you need a domain name.

That's weird--I thought I heard somewhere that they could set it up as, for example, http://www.byethost.com/yoursite/ till you are ready to add the domain.
